This is done so the HERMS our fitting and mash in aren’t touching each other. It makes opening/closing valves as well as making connections easy without busting a knuckle. We use 4’ and 6’ hoses and the 4’ hose reaches easily. Any heat loses are completely negligible.

No worries on this guys! Any heat losses from the bottom are negligible. There is plenty of power to make up for any conductive losses to the table or convective losses through the sidewalls. The table around the kettles barely gets warm during the brew day.

Sorry about the issue! We would recommend trying to push the HERMS coil in further. Most the time the issue is that the coil is not fully seated. It is recommended to use a little water to help lubricator the seals.
