    Yeast

not trolling, trying to help as an accomplished distiller that came from a homebrewing background.

    Yeast

just trying to say that proof does not necessarily equal 'clean neutral', and show evidence that I know what the heck I am talking about...

    Yeast

Calibrated 192.0 proof with calibration sheets.. shows 196.5 on the hydro @80.6F What I am stating is that proof is no guarantee of it being clean neutral. I can make a cheapie hydrometer say 190 with crappy spirits in a heartbeat..

    Yeast

if you are making ethanol for such uses, fermenting and distilling to get 190+ proof and 'clean' or neutral ethanol, the specific strain of yeast is not nearly as important as your fermentation and distillation methods. You could make super clean ethanol from champagne yeast, one of the dozens...

    Not sure what I'm doing!

I would not mess with anything less than a 15, you can relieve the pressure, remove the spear, get/make a 1-sided tri-clamp gasket, and clamp a 2" TC fitting to it... you can heat with flame if you are outside away from flammable materials, and getting a good seal is easy with tri-clamps or...

    Distilling.. Legal...?

I saw your unedited reply to my post in my email, thank you for doing your research and correcting, I urge you to pick up the phone and call your senator and representative after reading the last section of the "craft beverage modernization act of 2015" and urge them to bring this back to congress!

    Distilling.. Legal...?

It depends on the state, In Florida, it is clearly, absolutely, written in stone, clear as day illegal to own a still or the products to make distilled spirits. The law does not cover the fact nearly everything used has another purpose, that is for the judge and or jury... Yes, you can get a...

    Equipment - will this work?

the entrance just needs to be below the liquid line, here it goes into the side below the liquid line, if it goes into the top, it has to have a tube that dips down below the liquid line.. in either case, if you put a semi-free-floating copper or stainless bowl/cap/thingy above where the vapor...

    Equipment - will this work?

If we turn every thread into the same thread discussing legality, you might as well shut the whole forum down for it... there is a thread for legality, this is not it....

    Yeast

yup, try it and report back... should be the same amount of nutrients to ferment as honey, which is basically void of nutrients that yeasties need.. 1.070 should not have the yeast producing good product... you may want to research this thing called TPW... not for me, but might be for you...

    Distilling to get non-alcoholic beer?

see post #12... machine to pull out at chilled temps for commercial use... in a laboratory rotary evaporator, they use a 60c(140f) bath to warm an alcohol containing liquid, the vapor temp is around 40c(104f) and they chill it in the vacuum back to 20c(60F) before removing the vacuum or...

    Distilling.. Legal...?

have you read this thread? LOL.... Seriously, though, on the subject of the original topic of "Distilling.. Legal...?": As others have said, this forum is not just for the US, and the forum is not the police for any nation.. US rules are very clear and outlined at...

    Steam Distillation of Hops

I wonder if the isomerization is happening in the extraction process and the hydrosol or oil can be dosed into beers... dosing anything smaller than a keg will be painstaking, but might be worth it..

Reduction of 2" SS to Copper for condenser

You may see copper on the outside, but rest assured, that shotgun Condensor on a Vendome, Headframe, or Red Boot continuous still is stainless on the inside...

    Distilling.. Legal...?

Perfectly legal to age spirits you bought and put in that barrel... although the surface to volume ratio of such a small barrel will allow you to over-age whatever you put in it in a matter of weeks.. fed is very clear on what is distilling and what is not...

Reduction of 2" SS to Copper for condenser

We are talking about copper in the DOWNWARD path being bad.... Copper in the UPWARD path is good... please read the article: "It was found that copper in the ascending phase on still decreased EC dramatically and copper was (re)introduced into column stills. Adversely copper salts in the new...

    Steam Distillation of Hops

    soon, it just arrived!
  19. clearwaterbrewer

    Distilling.. Legal...?

Yes, you have it correct, I would add enough to stop fermentation is all.... additional info - if you had 5.0 gal of 10% mead, that is 20proof, and 1.00 proof gallons (5.0 x .20) If you add 1 gal of 120 proof honey distillate, that is 1.2 proof gallons, for a total of 2.2 proof-gallons, and...

    Steam Distillation of Hops

This was just purchased and is on it's way... obviously I will need a larger flask, but this is the mac-daddy Buchi R-215... with vacuum controller.. I need to get my small chiller set up and see if my automotive vacuum pump is good enough or if I need to get a buchi one... here is a link to a...
