    Trouble shooting

fly sparge is when you use the less solubility of sugar in water to push it out of the grain. slowly rinsing it.

    Trouble shooting

i heat it up by talking sexy to it, then dump it in? lol it cools down a bit afterwards, but is still about the right temp.....
  3. bracconiere

    Trouble shooting

i only use 7 gallons for 20-23 pounds.....for a 10 gallon batch, and fly sparge with 10 gallons 168f or so water, over about a couple hours...

    Trouble shooting

i'd use less strike water, and more sparge water? with my fly sparge setup i'd mash in 1.3qt/lb, and sparge with final expected volume, SLOWLY!

    A gravity mystery?

did you check it every hour? it might have just slowed?

    Let's see some clear wort

as soon as you add yeast the law says it's beer! (hmm, i wonder if you did a natural ferment a person could have gotten away with it! :))

    Let's see some clear wort

hmmm, i plan on brewing a porter-ish beer tomorrow. i'll have to remember to scrub my cylinder good and post a pic! ;)

    Decoction mash

:mug: i was going to say 155 seems low for a second step and shoot for 162. and to use thermometer and stir it in and check the temp. add more or less to hit your temp. next reply, i got punched in the face! :mug: (not sure if my simple way helps)

    Rice husk

you squares, you gotta smoke the ganj. but they'll screw you on a ph meter at the hydro dept! i blew $130 on one that didn't even have a replaceable probe, crapped out after a couple months!

    Rice husk

that's what mine were from the garden store. might want to call around! (if you ever need anymore) edit: this the local shop where i used to live i bought them from...looks like the price went up! lol https://rat.sparetimegardencenter.com/products/rice-hulls--br-50--421.html edit #2: but...

    Rice husk

yeah i bought a 50lb bale for $7 or something at the garden store. last many years then i started blowing through it here making 100% white rice beer. $8 for a 20lb bag of white rice at walmart, and it took a 5 gallon bucket of rice hulls to even get a slow sparge going. but it worked, and was...

    Rice husk

i've never really needed to use rice hulls. probably would have been nice if the garden stores around here sold 50lb bales though for my, 8lb malt, 5lb white flour beers! they sparged but it was rough!

need some help with low effec!

well, this batch is cooling! it's down to 90f and at 1.057 maybe 58.......that makes the difference between 94%, or 97%...i adjusted the ph, but like just shook baking soda in to the mash. over did it, doh! but then i started adding HCl to it, and my probe finaly bit the big one, it was jumping...

need some help with low effec!

ok so i see for my next recipe beersmith i'll have about 2.25 gallons grain absorbtion. so i think i'll let it run dry, just to make me a gallon shy of a full pot, then put the squeeze to it. should be able to get that last gallon out undilluted.
  15. bracconiere

need some help with low effec!

i pretty much always use 7 gallons strike water for my 10 gallon batches, and sparge with 10 gallons. but i'm thinking SERIOUSLY ;) i already kinda do a lazy batch/fly sparge, because i'll forget to add water a couple times during the sparge and it goes dry. maybe if i could cut back on the...

need some help with low effec!

and here is the history of my effec. back in 2005, i sparged full open. was getting 63%, learned from the morebeer forums, sparge slow, and ph. bought a ph meter and started adjusting ph, and sparging slow which bumpped me to 83%, which i was happy with for a while. then when i started malting...

need some help with low effec!

hey the trash compactor was a serious idea! do my mash then, dump it in a trash compactor with a drain, to squeeze out the remaining wort. and i'd sparge by weight so i don't over sparge! somebody, forget who, ask if i sparge to 1.000. i politely explained i would if i could! ;) something like...

need some help with low effec!

honestly i don't know. i just brewed a batch with 15lb's pale, 1 lb 60L, 2.5lb's white flour...got a slight bit more then 10 gallons of what read 1.059 at 85f.....and i WILL get two full 5 gallon corny's from it.....so beersmith tells me that 92% temp corrected.....now that i've come close to...

need some help with low effec!

this is porfessional sports! consistantly shooting 3 pointers might make you win the game, but you need the dunks! and when i started regualarly brewing i got 62%, which is why i'm so proud now! (but still want to know how to get it to be 97% instead of 92%!) and malting my own barley is what...

need some help with low effec!

if it helps, with my tap water and a working ph meter. i got about between 5.0-5.6 tested at mash temp. usually had the best results at 5.3...but not sure if that could throw it off by 3-5%? and being i've been.. well would you think if it's more acidictic with my tap water, would it be better...
