    Carboy Size: Single Vessel Fermentation

Just to clarify, I understand the c02 pushes out the oxygen during fermentation. But once fermentation is complete, and you start to open the vessel to take samples, replace blowoff, ect., isn't oxygen let into the vessel?

    Carboy Size: Single Vessel Fermentation

So it sounds like 6-6.5 gallons is ideal. My question is, would that volume be too much head space to keep the beer in for the entire process? (Keep in mind I'm using no secondary. I leave in primary for 4 weeks then bottle.)

    Carboy Size: Single Vessel Fermentation

So as some have suggested on this forum, I do my entire fermentation in one carboy. No secondary. My question is, for this style brewing, what is the ideal size carboy?

American Porter Founder's Porter Clone - Partial Mash

Sounds great, I cant wait to try this! This will be my second brew, so two more beginner question.. 1. I seem to only see hops sold in 1 oz increments.. Is this generally the case or am I looking in the wrong places? 2. Pellets or whole hops?

American Porter Founder's Porter Clone - Partial Mash

Thanks, this recipe looks great! How long does this need to sit in the bottles? I just bottled my first batch (an ipa) which recommended 2 weeks, is it the same for this recipe? Also, any idea about how much this recipe cost? Thanks!

Lots of trub/dry hop. Reduce loss?

OK great, thank you. What are the best ways to cold crash without a freezer? I was thinking of filling a cooler with ice, and placing the carboy in that, outside (40 degrees) for 48 hours. Suggestions?

Lots of trub/dry hop. Reduce loss?

Ok, so next time I will definatly use hop bags. WLP 001. Also, can I cold crash even though I want to use priming sugar to bottle carbonate? Im afraid the cold might kill all the yeast I need to bottle carb..

Lots of trub/dry hop. Reduce loss?

I am currently brewing a pliny the elder clone which called for a lot of hops; 7 oz during boil and 5 oz dry hop! As a result, I have a huge amount of trub/hop residue in my carboy... As you can tell by the picture, I have lost about a gallon to this debris. My question is, what the best way to...

    secondary fermentation in IPA necessary

Woah, I've been reading the forum all day debating weather or not to transfer to secondary when dry hopping. In all the cases I've read, it was you recommended keeping the beer in primary the entire time. Whats different this time? Also, I'd love your advice, what do you recommend i do? I'm...

    Specific First Brew Q!

Ok good to know.. So can I get away with only my 5 gallon carboy? I don't see why I need a bottling bucket, I have my kettle..

    Specific First Brew Q!

Is the hydrometer necessary? If yes, why? :mug: Also, I've been thinking, provided I use a blow off tube can get away with only using my 5 gallon carboy? I don't get why I need a separate bottling bucket or second fermentation bucket. Couldn't I just use my 5 gallon kettle as a bottling...

Hey guys, I've been reading this forum for awhile now, learning a lot, and I'm finally ready to brew! I just have two lingering questions I could use some help with... 1. Long story short, I have exactly 37 days to brew, is that enough time to go from extract kit to bottled product? 2...
