    Feed Store Barley

I'm trying to get my plans together for my first all grain brew. My sister in-law works at a feed store, and can get a great deal on barley. Is there any difference between feed barley and the barley you'd buy from a brew shop?

Plan for all grain in motion

Sounds to me like the extra money spent on a good fitting is worthwhile. My brother works at a nuts and bolts store, so I shouldn't have any problems finding the washers. On second thought he might be able to find the rest of the fittings too, and get them at discount. Thanks everyone

Plan for all grain in motion

I'm excited to delve into the world that is all grain. I just purchased a 10 gallon water cooler, and I'm looking at different mash tun set-ups. I stumbled across this http://cruisenews.net/brewing/infusion/page1.php Has anyone used this setup, if so, do you have any problems with it...

    another high OG question

RECIPE: 7lbs extra light LME 1 1/2lbs honey 1lb rice syrup solids 1/2lb honey malt 1oz cascade 60mins 1oz fuggles 10mins I put the cooled wort of this recipe onto the yeast cake of a previous batch. After dumping the cooled wort, I made my way into the house with my wort-filled primary then I...

    Sake?

I agree, sounds a little tricky. Once I get a few more batches under my belt, I might take a stab at it. Thanks for the info.

    Sake?

I was browsing through the recipe threads, and didn't notice any sake recipes. I'm just curious if anyone has tried to make it, and if they did, how long did it take and how did it turn out?

    No Bubbles

This is actually the second time this has happened to me. I've only brewed four batches, and its happened on the last two. The first time it happened, I didn't have a hydrometer, and went off taste alone to determine if it had fermented at all. Unfortunately I ended up transferring the beer...

    No Bubbles

Brewed my brown ale sunday night, and after 72 hours I haven't heard any bubbling coming from the airlock. I cracked the lid I saw the krausen caked to the sides of the bucket and figured I'd go ahead and take a specific gravity reading to make sure I was making progress. The SG was down from...

COuple questions on my first brew

One thing I've learned about home brewing is that new homebrewers tend to jump the gun on just about every situation; myself included. If you're seeing bubbles that frequently, it seems to me like there is still work to be done. I know it's difficult to wait, but having bubbles that frequently...

    How much Victory?

I've been looking all over for my nut brown ale recipe notes, but I've got the suspicion that SWMBO may have thrown them away. But if I remember correctly(I found the notes, and didn't remember the hops correctly) I used 1 oz willamette 60 min, and .5 oz liberty 10 min. If I changed anything...

    Howdy from Maryland

Welcome to the forum. I just started brewing last summer, and I've found this site to be a tremendous help. Your first batch will get better with every one of em that you drink. By the time you drink the last one, it will be the best one by far, and you would have wished that you waited a...

    How much Victory?

FWIW, I used .5 lbs chocolate, .5lbs victory and .5 lbs crystal 60L on my nut brown ale. Taste was initially malty, slightly sweet, finishing with a hint of nutty character. Color was a deep brown out of the bottle, with a slight tint of red when held up to the light. Overall it is a very...

    dry malt versatility?

Crystal malt comes anywhere from 10L-120L ( "L" stands for Lovibond, a measure of color). The higher the number the darker the color.

    Got permission from SWMBO...

I agree, this site has very simple/easy-to -follow instructions on how to brew all grain. It also has a suggestion on how to make a very cheep mash tun. I actually just priced this sites mash tun set up, and a stainless steel turkey fryer at sears, and total cost was less then 100 dollars.

    What kind of extract?

The kind of extract and how much you use depends on the style of beer your making, there isn't really a "common extract." Usually extract recipes contain about 8#s of extract +- a pound or so. For example, my last recipe used 6.6 lbs LME (1 can is 3.3lbs) 1 pound of rice solids, and 1...

Secondary Fermention - Pros and Cons?

"It is important to minimize the amount of headspace in the secondary fermentor to minimize the exposure to oxygen until the headspace can be purged by the still-fermenting beer. For this reason, plastic buckets do not make good secondary fermentors unless the beer is transferred just as the...

Secondary Fermention - Pros and Cons?

The reason most people don't use plastic buckets as their secondary, is because plastic buckets have too much head space and you risk oxygenating your brew, causing off flavors in your beer.
