Washington Cask Beer Festival - Seattle 3/22

Boy I look red in that picture. But it's obviously the bad lighting. :cross: Ditto everything said already. We had a really good time meeting everybody. Nothing quite like beer to bring us all together. A lot of good beers were had! I agree with Brewtopia's list, and I'd add...

Washington Cask Beer Festival - Seattle 3/22

I'm going to the evening session as well. How should we identify each other? Cowboy hats? Okay, bad idea...I don't have a cowboy hat. Any other ideas? Red shirts? Sweaters around our necks? We should definitely meet up at some point. My plan is to get there pretty close to 6.

Hard Liver Barleywine Fest in Seattle

Man, Brewtopia's got all the connections. I went Sunday afternoon, but was sampling with all of the common folk, and had a really good time. Got through about 11 samples or so before I was done. (What, there were 40 more to go?) Loved the Hair of the Dog Doggie Claws '08 and the Pike Old...

Hard Liver Barleywine Fest in Seattle

I'm going to the Barleywine fest probably Saturday evening. I'm going through a crazy barleywine fit and I brewed my first one last weekend so I really feel like I can't miss it. Though I'm not sure how good an idea it is to try 30+ barleywines. :drunk: And I'm so freakin' excited about...

    Principles of Brewing Science--George Fix

I read that about a month ago. I have no science background (okay, maybe some high school chemistry about 15 years ago) and most of it was a bit over my head and I was struggling to make the information relevant to me. But I could see myself getting into the chemistry, so I'm going to keep...

Anyone have an extra 5/8 SS fender washer?

Don't know if this will help anybody, but my 5/8 SS washer search finally came to an end! I was at Home Depot and after looking through the drawers for about 30 minutes with no luck, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a "bolt kit" hanging on a rack. It's in a small plastic package with an...

any good brewing books out there?

Radical Brewing by Randy Mosher (Not to be confused with Sam Calagione's Extreme Brewing) is an entertaining book. It mixes history with techniques with creative use of ingredients. And it's got a lot of interesting recipes as well.

    Lavender beer (I know)

Last time I was in Sequim I had some tasty lavender wine, so why not lavender beer! I seem to recall coming across lavender beer recipes when doing random google searches for beer recipes, so you might want to try that if you haven't already.

Beer Tools... what is not to like?

I use Beer Tools and it works for me. I don't need an inventory either (LHBS is 15min away). As for what it lacking besides inventory, no, the program cannot account for the late extract addition, so if you are an extract brewer that uses this method your IBUs will probably be off. And...

    Dumping the trub

This is an interesting idea. It's mostly whole hops that give me problems. I have a large grain bag that I can try to use. Hmmm, I've tried the whirlpool method...but I can't say that I've whirpooled the crap out of the wort. I've whirlpooled the heck and maybe even the bejesus, but I...

    Dumping the trub

I'm new to the AG/Full boil thing. So far on every batch, when I'm transferring to the fermenter, my siphon has clogged, I've gotten frustrated, and I just dumped all of the wort through a strainer into the fermenter. By doing this, am I defeating the purpose of Irish Moss and a good cold...

Wanted: Mac & Jack African Amber recepie

I posted the extract +grains version of this a while back which you can find by searching for "mac and jacks." It was in BYO's 150 clone recipes. Unfortunately I don't have that here with me at work and my internet is down at home, but maybe someone else has that handy and can tell you...

Naked City Imperial Rye on tap in Seattle!

Heck yes. I will be there around 5:30. And I'll see if I can't get a friend or two to help celebrate the occasion.

    Measuring efficiency for partial mash?

Do you have a hydrometer flask? I just ladle the wort into the flask with a deep spoon or ladle and then measure away. Siphoning seems like too much effort for such a small sample.

Naked City Imperial Rye on tap in Seattle!

Yes, absolutely keep us updated. Stix is but a 15 minute walk from my house. :ban:

    draining speed

I mash in a 5 gallon Rubbermaid round cooler with an SS braid and batch sparge. Do I need to be concerned about how quickly I drain the wort. If so, what speed is appropriate?

    American Belgians?

I don't know where you are in the Pacific Northwest, but Lazy Boy Brewing in Everett does a Belgian Strong Ale. I'm not a big fan of Belgian-y beers, so I can't really comment, but others have told me that it's good.

    Good Breweries in Seattle?

I'll Fifth Pike Brewery, but my all time favorite Seattle Brewpub is Elysian. All of their beers are good, they always have seasonals and always have something cask conditioned. It's also walkable from downtown. If you like Rogue and can go for a 20 minute drive, there's also the Issaquah...
