Clear glass bottles - how bad are they?

Nova, I use 1 liter clear bottles (Lorina Soda bottles) and haven't had any noticeable difference in a batch. I saw the bottles you're talking about at IKEA the other day and I was going to pick up a bunch. The problem I saw was that they have a very distinct seam where the two halves were...

    Very little carbonation

I've never used honey, but I notice no residual flavor when priming with corn sugar. It ferments pretty cleanly.

Is it okay to boil the hops in a grain bag?

You just have to make sure there's enough play in the bag for the hops to spread out. If you use a bag (as I do) just tie it off at the very top, not down around the hops. You want a loose sack of hops, not a hop "packet". If that makes any sense.

Dry Hopping: When/How to transfer & bottle?

Evan! I couldn't get into the Subscribed Threads screen, but that's not why I'm posting. How much basil did you use in that cinnamon basil pale ale? How long did you boil it? 0 minutes? 5 minutes? 10 minutes? My wife wants me to try some "odd" adjuncts. I tried rosemary. Let me tell...

    Ouch! Scary question...

The temp gun is most likely measuring the temperature of the inside surface of the freezer (which can vary drastically depending on where you point the gun), not the air temperature. You can either fill a carboy, let it cool overnight and get the temp as everyone else said, or just suspend a...

    o'fest for frist brew

As I see it, you have two main options. 1. Lagers take longer than ales, so if you're antsy to taste your first brew order the ale and wait a week to brew. It will still be faster overall than waiting for the lager to finish. 2. If you're not the impatient type, then check if the carboy...

    Northern Brewer's 80/- kit

Cheesefood, Go out and get a bottle of Belhaven Scottish Ale. It's pretty easy to find and comes in a single 500ml bottle so you're not stuck with a six-pack if you don't like it. If you don't like it, you probably don't like the style because, while it is not the best in the world, it...

Hops growers report. How far along are your hops? Pics, 1st time grower.

I use a very light soap and water solution (no dyes or perfumes) on my herbs and veggies. It works really well. Just rinse them lightly before you use.

    Priming the Party Pig

I usually use 3/4 cup for 5 gallons. I would prime in the bottling bucket, then fill the pig and bottles. That way you get the appropriate amount of sugar per gallon in both the pig and the bottles.

Oh no - forgot to mix!!

Yeah, Wulax, just wulax... I mean relax. :D Like Orpheus said, you're supposed to get a layer of sediment in the bottom of each bottle. Siphoning the beer on top of the priming sugar will cause enough motion in the bucket to mix the sugar throughout. Don't think about changing your...

    Terry Foster's "Pale Ale"

I wanted this beer to have a lighter mouthfeel so I used less maltodextrine than normal.

Feedback on planned equipment/first brew please.

I just intentionally bought a case of PET bottles for only one reason. You can't take glass bottles on a boat here on Texas lakes and rivers. If you get caught you can be fined.

    Terry Foster's "Pale Ale"

Here's the very simple extract only IPA recipe I just brewed. -------------------------------------------------- 3 Gallon boil - topped off to 5.5 gallons in primary 8.00 lbs. Light LME 1.75 oz. Northern Brewer @ 11.2 AAU - 60 min. 0.50 oz. Spalt @ 8.0 AAU - 60 min. 0.50 oz...

    Terry Foster's "Pale Ale"

The IPA that I just made (and is almost all gone) was super simple and my friends and wife agree that it's great. It has only been ready for about 2 weeks, and it's almost all gone with friends wanting one or two, wait maybe just one more... ok, two more. :D I don't mind though. It...

    secondary ferment

Professional brewer's call it a bright tank, conditioning tank, or clearing tank. If we all get together, maybe we can change the vocabulary of homebrewers everywhere... or other homebrewers will just think we don't know what we're talking about. ;)
