    A beautiful sight

NICE. No, really. If I saw that at a pub I'd say, "I'll have whatever he's having."

esb not hoppy at all. questions...

I just made an American Pale Ale that, when I tasted during bottling, had NO bitterness or hop flavor that I could detect. I left it alone for a month and it's AMAZING. Sometimes the green/flat beer flavor can over power other flavors. It now has strong hop bitterness and aroma. It's amazing...

    Harry Potter Butterbeer

This is a SWEEEET idea. I always thought of the butterbeer in Harry Potter as a butterscotch flavored root beer (basically). I would therefore go with an English Brown Ale (Southern or Northern doesn't matter) with a touch of butterscotch flavoring. ChimayLover, if you brew yours and I...

Is There An Alternative To The Grain Bags?

Mostly tannins. Try your own experiment. Have someone (while you're not in the room) make two cups of tea using the same tea bags, steeped the same length of time, with the same temperature water, but squeeze one of the bags. See if you can taste it without knowing which one was which...

Is There An Alternative To The Grain Bags?

It's the same reason you shouldn't squeeze every bit out of a tea bag (hehe. I said tea bag... :D ). The grains act as a rudimentary filter, hanging on to some of the components which can make your beer less than perfect. Will it "ruin" your beer? No. Is it better not to squeeze? Yes. On...

    My LHBS doesn't give a $#!t ! New recommendation.

BLAME CANADA... BLAME CANADA... :D I couldn't resist. I agree that every country has good and bad beers. I have to keep explaining to my friends that the commercials should say, "Foster's. Australian for PISS." :off: ALERT As far as absinthe goes, save your money. Buy some...

    The AG Fantasy

Basically, it takes more practice to brew from scratch and get it just right but when you finally get your process and recipe down it's like the difference between the Duncan Hines box and your Grandma's chocolate cake.

    How do Breweries Lower Costs

All-grain is a huge money saver, and as everyone else said in one way or another... economies of scale. Mostly breweries save money by buying in bulk and reusing yeast. On a small scale, homebrewers can save money by going all-grain as long as you keep your gadget addiction in check...

    Wyeast

I read the original post to mean that they were the same yeast strain, but a different pack size. After reading this post then reading the original post again, I agree. They were probably different strains. You'll wind up with beer, probably good beer, but without knowing which strain you...

    Wyeast

Believe it or not, I would say the Strawberry Blond would need the higher pitching rate (the green pack, 100 Billion cells in this case). This is because a blond should be fairly clean so you don't want a lot of yeast reproduction to take place since this causes esters and flavors to be...

    Subsitute stout yeast?

The Nottingham will be fine. You have to realize that the main difference between a stout and a porter is in the grain bill, not the yeast. I think you'll be really happy with your stout. If you really want to test it out, make the same beer again with one of the other yeasts. Then do it...

    Dry Hopping First Time

If you're looking to add some bittering during dry hopping, you'll need to boil the hops in some water and pour the entire thing into secondary (after it cools, of course). IMHO, however, you should just toss some hops in a muslin or cheesecloth bag (if you don't have a nylon "hop bag") into...

    Sonnuva...

Yeah, I got a candy thermometer for the boil since it has that protective metal shell and clips to the side. At least you had extra ingredients. Nothing worse than a screw-up when the LHBS is closed.

    Free How-To Videos?

There are some issues with Alton's technique, but nothing that would ruin your beer. Just some things that he could have done better. Check out this thread for a full discussion about the strengths and weaknesses of his instructions. Google Video and YouTube are great sources too. Search...

If/When I should add lemon to Wheat Beer

What did you use for the Orange flavor? I used orange zest in my Orange Pale Ale, and it tastes like Mr. Clean Orange All Purpose Cleaner. :( I'm not tossing it yet. I'll let it age for a few months and see if that dies down a bit.

Can I add malt just before kegging?

I vote for not taking temperature into account. The 6 lbs of LME by itself puts you at 1.042. Don't do anything to the beer. Keg it, wait for it to age a couple weeks then carb and try it out. Carbonation also adds mouthfeel to a beer.

    My LHBS doesn't give a $#!t ! New recommendation.

I go to Homebrew Headquarters, what's the second one? I agree, though. I've never had a problem with them. They're all knowledgable, helpful, and friendly.

    Hefeweizen vs Belgian Wit

I figured you were talking about the carbonation volumes which would be true to style, but I was mostly responding to Paranode since he seemed worried about having bottled his hefe already. I was only trying to point out that unless he took pains to make the carbonation to style he had nothing...

    Need suggestions

Free is good. I agree with billpa. The "Robust Porter" part is kind of hard to read. It would be more clear if it were below the instead of around it. You could then make the rest of the text a bit smaller and move it down further. I like the overall look, though. Good color scheme.
