    When to worry?

Ok so I was going to order a thief online but lucked out finding a store in town that sells them! Took my first hydrometer reading yesterday and I think it went well. Other than the part where I lifted the thief out and like a tue noob touched the bottom and beer came gushing out all over the...

    When to worry?

That deffinatley makes me feel better. Just knowing that something similar happened before to someone else and they still had a drinkable product. Thanks for the input. Referring back to some previous posts...i didnt know that floating the hydrometer in the bucket itself was even an option. I...

    Hydrometer

Yeh i stayed on the volume for the recipe. So i wont need to test the volume until the end of fermentation right? So if this is true i could order a sample tube online and get it by the time i need it?

    Initial signs of failure/success?

Cool. Well i havent opened it so im at least good on that front! I did rehydrate the yeast before pitching it. I just wasn't sure when activity would start. On a side note...how bad is it if i didn't use sanitized water or vodka in my airlock? When reading the instructions through midwest they...

    Initial signs of failure/success?

Nah, no bubbling. I guess I kinda expected to see that first thing this morning because from my limited understanding I thought that since I used dry yeast that it would activate fairly quickly. I'll check the lid again before I leave for work.

    Hydrometer

The recipe is an Irish red ale, extract, from Midwest. The tube the hydrometer came in only goes about halfway up the length of the hydrometer so I didn't think that would work for it?

    Initial signs of failure/success?

So first brew day has come and gone and I wake up and instantly go to check the fermenter...is the anyway to know within the first day that things went well with the brewing process? Or on the other side of things, if it didn't go well? Thanks for the information!!

    Hydrometer

Newbie hydrometer question...I just brewed my first batch yesterday! Beyond excited! I was deep into the brewing process when I remembered that I was at the point of getting a hydrometer reading. I have never used one before but I have one. But I don't have anything to use as a sample "vile"...
