over diluted batch, low starting gravity

How would one check for infection? Yeast was Safale S-04 that came with the kit. I don't recall if the packet had a date on it but the kit was a recent purchase from the local shop. Ferment temp was about 68-69 as that was ambient in my basement, probably would do better a few degrees lower...

over diluted batch, low starting gravity

Thanks for all the replies. I am quite thorough with my mixing so I don't think my SG was too far off on the light side. So after about 1 week in primary I checked the gravity and it was just about at the FG listed for the kit. The sample smelled and tasted fantastic. I decided to let it...

over diluted batch, low starting gravity

Well I had my first boil over. I didn't leave enough head space in my brew pot and she foamed over when I stirred it a few minutes into the boil after first hops addition. What a mess, I lost probably 1/2 gallon or more of wort due to that boil over, all over the stove top and floor. :smack...

    2013 Hop garden photo thread

Too funny! My wife hates the smell of hops too. She does like beer though and always tries any IPA that I try, but hasn't found one she likes yet. I cut down my Centennials Saturday and she even helped me harvest the hops. (3.9 lbs wet) (in addition to the few ounces I harvested in July) I...

    Moving to secondary fermentor

Thanks again. This is my 5th or 6th batch using a bb kit and always have just sprinkled the dry yeast over the wort and stirred it in, not saying it is correct but that's what the directions in the kit say to do. Last weekend's cream ale I decided to hydrate first, so far so good. I stirred out...

    Moving to secondary fermentor

Thanks for the advice about the DIPA, and that is good news, I will get to enjoy it sooner! I don't have temperature records on my dunkelweizen fermentation other than that I pitched the single dry yeast packet at around 70f per the kit instructions, I did not hydrate it first. After...

    Moving to secondary fermentor

Bump, for my question about the dunkelweizen gravity. Also, this beer is tasty so far but imo it could use a little more carbonation. I did not use the full package of priming sugar that came with the kit, I used about 3/4 cup plus a tablespoon. Maybe not enough sugar? I'm letting it age in...

Advice for those who pick hops...

I've never had any scratches like that, always pick with short sleeves, no gloves. Sometimes my arms get a little itchy after I harvest but not for long. I have fairly sensitive skin too.

    Dry Hopping with Wet Hops?

I hope you don't mind a related question, if dry hopping is maybe not a good way to use wet hops, what is? I am in the process of harvesting and drying, but I'm planning on brewing this weekend so I will have wet hops available. One of our local breweries has a harvesting party and makes a wet...

I started harvesting my Centennials yesterday here in central NY state. I think I need to invest in a dehydrator to have room to store them all.

    Moving to secondary fermentor

I'm glad that I saw this thread. I'm getting ready to make a double ipa, first time making something high abv. Now that I've read this I plan to really take my time before bottling, then also try to be patient once it's bottled. On what I think may be a related note: a few weeks ago I bottled...

My 1st post. Here are my 3rd year centennial hops, all budded up nicely, it won't be long now! Last year I harvested 3 times. Bob
