    Bottling woes

I've got the red wing capper. I've only used it to bottle a case of 22 ounce bombers (bought new from brew store), and 18 sam adams bottles. No major crapups yet. I just place it on top, and press the wings home to their stops. All a smooth motion, no slamming them down or anything. Just...

How do you chill your wort?

I've only made two batches using a 3 gallon boil, but had no trouble getting it down to temp in the sink. Everyday I make 2 trays of ice and put the frozen cubes into a tupperware container in the freezer. By brew day, I'm overflowing in ice. Usually I dont even use it all in the chilling, so I...

    Need your wisdom.

Absolutely I would finish it. There's nothing wrong with a prehopped all extract beer. It'll taste like a commercial beer after a few weeks. My first 2 batches were those type and I'm enjoying one right now! Good luck :mug:

    forgot the sugar????

It was definitely supposed to go in with the malt extract. How to add it now, I dont specifically know.. I think I'd spray star san solution on the bag of sugar (if it is plastic), all around the fermenter lid, then my hands, then open that sucker up and gently stir in the sugar with a...

    When to use a blow-off

While I cant contribute advice since I've never had a blowout yet.. I can say that I have a 1060 ale in a 6.5 gallon bucket now and it's fermenting so vigorously that when I put my nose to the airlock, I can hear and feel the co2 shooting out the little holes in the airlock lid! I'm trying to...

    A new batch... another mistake?

Makebeer.net is the US distributor for Coopers, this shows what they recommend: http://www.makebeer.net/item.asp?idProduct=18&idCategory=104&idSubCategory=0 I'm unsure what you can do now, I really dont have enough experience.

    A new batch... another mistake?

Typically, the complete coopers kits are 1 can of their pre-hopped malt extract flavors, plus 1kg of one of their dextrose/malto dextrin combinations. (brewing sugar, brew enhancer 1, brew enhancer 2 are all different proportions of those 2 things). Plus the coopers yeast, and coopers...

    Coopers Lager Kit Question

Oh that reminds me, the kit comes with the coopers carbonation drops, which I used for the first brew. You'll notice when you check them out that sometimes you come across one that is misshapen or small. I tried to use all the similar sized ones to try to keep carbonation levels the same in each...

    Coopers Lager Kit Question

Hi, I brewed that and even have 1 bottle left. It was my first time and before I joined here, so I did it purely by the instructions. Plus based off of youtube videos like CraigTube's. I really liked how the beer came out and after it had aged a couple of weeks in the bottle. And that was even...

How many beers do you have going?

Bottled - Canadian Blonde Ale primary 1 - Kit-bashed Coopers Real Ale primary 2 - Midwest's Autumn Amber Ale I know I like ales, so I'm stockpiling in case I dont care as much for whatever I try next. I havent tried a very wide range of brews in my life, so thats just my way of ensuring I...

Since I am going to keg can I brew another batch in the Bottling Bucket?

You can buy them with a spigot, so yeah for sure you can use it is what I'd say. If you're worried it might leak, then fill it with water, fit the lid, and apply some air pressure to the grommet hole or something and watch for leaks. It probably wont unless you need a new gasket.

    Reverse Osmosis Water?

I have enough containers saved that I dont let any waste water go down my drain until I use it for something. Currently I'm using waste water in 2 swamp coolers, also in the half gallon jugs that I freeze. I also store it and use it for laundry. On brew day, I fill my fridge with jugs and...

    Reverse Osmosis Water?

I looked up "bodily ion imbalance" I think it was, and checked wikipedia on electrolytes and stuff. But it just seems odd that if you're hydrating with water (even ro water) that you could actually cause symptoms of dehydration due to ion imbalance (low electrolytes?)! Is that actually the case?

    Fermentation Bucket Lids

I've been wondering WHY doesnt some smart person create some CLEAR lids for the standard buckets? Seriously, it's so great to be able to look in there and see how the krausen is coming along, see if it's going to blow off before it actually does.. see if the beer is clearing or has any sort...

    Reverse Osmosis Water?

I'm a new brewer, but I bought an RO filter years ago for my hydroponics gardening. You need a good base water for that, so that the additions of nutrients are as exact as possible with no initial PH buffering issues to deal with. My tap water takes a lot of ph adjuster to overcome it's...

    Bottled or Distilled?

What *I* would do, and what I do do, is boil tap water for the boil portion, and top up the last 2 gallons or so with fridge chilled RO water from my own RO filter. I have had great tasting beer so far with vigorous fermentation, knock on wood. My RO water comes in at less than 10 PPM around PH...

    Fermentation Bucket Lids

Watch those fingernails. Almost took half a dozen off the first time I cracked the lid on my new bucket. Sheesh. That tool should be standard issue, with the logo of the shop on it.

SWMBO says I MUST brew in shed, too hot???

The smell is delicious!!! Kick her to the curb :) haha, just kidding.. partly.. I mean come on.. it's a fantastic, delicious smell. Just like making a good coffee, or fresh bread or meal. Yeah I'm single, but man. DOESNT want the wonderful aroma(stink!?) in the house? Does not compute...

Adding ABV to an AHS Oatmeal Stout?

I just did a midwest autumn amber ale kit and added half a pack (500g) of coopers brewing sugar I wanted to start using up. It's mostly dextrose. It went from 1046ish to 1060ish. I got it all set in the primary and tasted the hydrometer sample and it was like sugar water. It was so sweet I...

    Can't get temp down

I'd just find a large plastic tote that your fermenter fits in. Then fill it with water up to the beer level, or near it, or whatever you can manage in the container. Then put ice and frozen water bottles, or what I use are 1/2 gallon containers into the water and watch your fermenter temp fall...
