When to Transfer from Primary to Secondary?

I think you could easily do 2 weeks, then 1 in secondary if you want. Be super sanitary and it should be cool. I bet if it were me though, I'd do 3 in the primary and bottle it without the second racking. If you're not flavoring it or something, I don't see a reason to. Any bacteria that tried...

When to Transfer from Primary to Secondary?

Yeah true! If you taste that it's not only not done, it may not be started! It's hard to wait "weeks" when you're dying to try your beer from the first batch. But it's better to just get a cheap case of something in the meantime and just think every day longer means your beer will be better. I...

When to Transfer from Primary to Secondary?

Try not to worry too much about the airlock seal. The CO2 layer is on top of the beer still, not the outside "air", so it's sort of like a cap on top of the liquid anyway. Should be fine. I'd taste it when I bottled to make sure it doesn't seem terribly sweet. Ever taste the wort before you add...

Just had my first bottle bomb!!!!!

Did the flip top shatter too? I'd have thought that a flip top would pop itself open. I have a couple of cases of those bottles which I like to use for ease of capping. I also thought maybe they would be safer in case of bombs but evidently not huh?

    Plumbers Lube vs Keg Lube

I've seen people saying you can use KY jelly too, it's obviously food safe. Maybe strange, but what the heck.

    Getting beers to carbonate

Been a while since I brewed but getting back into it soon. I never had problems when I let the beer swirl into the bottling bucket, then when it had an inch or so, carefully pour in the cooled sugar solution all at once. Never stirred or held part of the sugar water for later or anything else...

Brew Masters on Discovery w/ Sam Calagione

I've never had any of their beer, but I like tv shows and brewing, so of course I was anticipating the show. It was an OK show I think. I really dont care about some silly singing or "being cool" or what have you. I did find the ingredients interesting when they listed them. The mixing of two...

    Air lock water level dropping

Your beer is trying to drink you!!! (insert creepy psycho music) I had it happen and pulled the airlock off and replaced it after a minute or so and refilled it (after a few spritzes of starsan on the grommet and airlock stem).

    5 gallons = 42 bottles (12oz)

Once I realized that the 5 gallon mark on my bucket was a half gallon low, my yield went up. :)

    Small problem with bottles.

Oxi clean residue is like that. It will rinse off if you get the water slightly more acidic.. such as white vinegar, some Star San would also work for that. Basically, the harder your water, the more oxi clean may make the white residue if you soak in it. I would also refrain from mixing...

Best Place For Special Type Of Bottles?

Dark amber glass for the win. Clear or blue or green is not good at blocking the damaging light. I think mexican styles are ok in other colors because it turns the beer "skunky" which is the style of cervesa. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Question: Measuring Dextrose - Grams to Cups/ML

I would eyeball it without a scale as well. Maybe take 3 containers, fill them equally, there's your 1/3rd-ish that you need.

Best Place For Special Type Of Bottles?

I think these days they're called EZ Cap. They're 16.9 oz (500ml) made in China (what a shocker) with rubber gaskets (which you can buy separately too). I love them for brew, just the right size and they carbonate nicely. Plus no caps to throw away or recycle somehow.

    Fermentation Temp

Just from my own reading about stuff, I don't think you get into "too long" until it's double digit weeks long, lol. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think 3 weeks is said to be enough in most cases if you don't use a secondary, but 4 definitely wouldn't be too much.

    Bottling question

I do a brew using a coopers real ale that is very boston lagery at 1 week old, but mellows way out after a few weeks. I kinda liked it better when green! It seemed to have that nice hop bite that puts a ring of flavor around your throat. But aged, it's gone. It's really super smooth and tasty...

    Fermentation Temp

Sounds good to me. Heck I'm keeping mine in the low 60's and they're coming out nice, so I sure wouldn't worry about it being too cool if it were me.

    Adding extract late in boil...

I do 3 gallon boil with 3 lbs of extract and then at the end I add the rest of the DME or LME for the recipe. Seems good!

    I'm brewing! I'm brewing!

Save the steeped grains and bake breads with it. Tastes great. Good luck and congrats!

    Just toss it out?

Last liquid I used was wyeast 1056 in a smack pack. I smacked it, and it was swelled right up like a football, and it still took a couple of days for it to begin vigorously fermenting. So I'm saying hang loose until day 4 before you decide.
