Hey Gang, it's "Moot" not "Mute"

Guilty as charged.... & don't give a rats ass.

Cooling 3-4 gal boils down in 20 min with no chiller or ice!

I've been doing this in my bath tub for awhile. Keep the drain cracked & the faucet on & find that sweet spot that keeps a constant circuit of fresh cool water at the desired volume & occasionally whirlpool. I try to not "float" as tipping is more of a risk in such a large tub, but I'm able to...

    Mashing help

To me, sparging BIBA is keeping it simple. Squeezing a hot bulky bag of grains was too sticky and tedious. Pouring hot water over it to extract all the sugars and simultaneously reach preboil volume required little effort and maximum sugar extraction IMO & experience. The runnings tend to begin...

    Mashing help

I've only done partial-mash BIAB in my kettle but I'll measure 1.25-1.5 qt/lb and mash for an hour, pull the bag and rest it on a grate over the brew kettle and then pour 170-180 degree water through the grains to sparge & hit my target pre-boil volume. I imagine I'd do a all grain BIBA somewhat...

    Canning beer at home

I've had craft brews from a can, but I think my personal reasons were mentioned earlier... I relate drinking beer from a can. To me, beer is BMC, & 211. When I pour from a bottle I think of it as ale, or lager... a more refined quality version of "beer". Funny how our minds work. But I think...

    Canning beer at home

I know it's supposed to be cheaper in the long run, portable, & with newer technologies not effect the taste... but perhaps it's just me, I still prefer bottles and feel the product tends to be of higher quality. A cleaner, pure flavor. Sure cans eliminate light exposure & supposedly no longer...

What would you make with these ingredients?

Second the Rye. I have a Rye APA fermenting and can't wait. Sierra's Ruthless Rye was my first taste of rye and it's a wonderful flavor addition.

My first all grain brew, BIAB method, with pics...

Thanks for intuitively answering this. I was wondering myself. Do any commercial products exist for this purpose or is it only DIY? I'll be doing my first BIAB on my blichmann & glad I stumbled onto this before I torched my grains.

    No hops brew

I routinely cook/bake w/ ingredients removed/adjusted to understand flavor profile & the chemistry behind it. Sure more often than not the outcome is less than desirable but I've learned far more through my experimental failures than I have through following tried & true recipes. This applies to...

    Oaked vanilla rum barley stout

Bummer. Still, from the recipe I put together w/ the help of Hopville, I was only 0.004 off from my estimated gravity. Despite the lack of a base malt I still followed proper mashing procedures with a mash out. I did have trouble keeping my temp where I wanted it during this time though but it's...

    Oaked vanilla rum barley stout

Lol, I actually think my partial mash is essentially me doing BIAB. I was YouTubing a lot of videos and your right, for me in my apartment, BIAB I believe is a viable option. As soon as my tax return comes in I'll be looking at adding a 15gal brew pot and an immersion chiller. Right now I have...

    Oaked vanilla rum barley stout

I know how to partial mash, and for lack of space in my apartment I'd switch to all grain just to have full control. The only reason the flaked barley was done in the boil was my LHBS store said to do it that way. The other grains were mashed. I'm actually not trying to focus heavily on the rum...

    Oaked vanilla rum barley stout

Oh and before anyone chimes in... OG= 1.054 White Labs Irish ale yeast was used w/ fermintation beginning within 12 hours and settling down around 72-84 hours. I'm limited as far as fermentation temps go so my carboy go in my pantry where it's about 70 degree fahrenheit 24/7.

    Oaked vanilla rum barley stout

Brewed a partial mash stout last weekend & just learning to piece my own recipes together. Really don't know what I'm doing but having fun doing it. I def. need to learn to stop listening to suggestions from my LHBS as they said dump my flaked barley into my boil for the full hour... I lost a...

    Pale Ale

Run it? Like through a program? I use Hopville.com I'm starting to realize it's pretty hard to mess up beer.

    Preparing and storing spent grains

Thanks for the quick responses. You guys are great! I'll split it up and try both suggested methods and let you know how it goes. Hopefully I don't burn them, that would be a shame.

    Preparing and storing spent grains

Spent last night on a partial-mash and really don't believe in just wasting all the spent grains. I love to bake, and have plenty of plans on what I'd like to do with my grains in that department, as well as use it as plant food for my 'work in progress' herb garden. It's the preparing part I'm...

    Danby 5.2 Keg Cooler

Sold by CostCo online, $399.99. Anybody have experience with the Danby brand or this particular model? I have a $300.00 coupon from my CostCo AmEx credit card to spend and would just pay the $100.00 difference. Just want to see if there's better deals out there, products, and if it's worth...

Using tap water via garden hose?

Its really easy to figure out. Drink from your hose... does it taste good? Then brew with the water. If your paranoid or a perfectionist, take a water sample from the hose and have it analyzed. The post-boil mineral deposits aren't necessarily bad. It just indicates perhaps hard water...

Using tap water via garden hose?

Wal-Mart had a blue 20' hose that states on the packaging you can drink safely from it. I run the water for a minute before I use it and beer has tasted fine.
