    Moving to 1 gallon batches

Target sells a 2gal Igloo water cooler for $12. I am going use BIAB and the cooler as a mash tun for 1-2.5 gallon batches. Northern brewer also sells cute little 2 gallon buckets for ferm chambers, $15 with lid IIRC. I use a 3 gallon BetterBottle for 2-2.5 gallon batches, and 1 gallon glass wine...

First IPA, first all-grain, recipe feedback--

Good advice. I'm picking some up for Brandon O's Graff and starters. I'll get some extra.

First IPA, first all-grain, recipe feedback--

Cool, thanks guys! I was to focus on the hops, but keep it relatively simple. Also I hear Apollo described as 'dank'? Anyway, I think I will change the hop schedule to: 0.5oz Summit @ FWH, 27 IBU 0.5oz Summit @ 30m, 19 IBU 1oz Cascade @ 15m, 9 IBU 1oz Summit @ 15m, 24 IBU 1oz Cascase & Summit at...

First IPA, first all-grain, recipe feedback--

I want to make a tasty IPA as my first all-grain brew. I have a 10-gal round Igloo cooler, which I am in the process of converting to a mash tun with the steel braid. I will be acquiring an 8-12 gallon kettle soon. In the meantime, I play with Beersmith. So what do you all think? Type: All...

    first time kegging help

    I had the same freak-out when I first stuck my 5lb tank in the fridge. But it's a simple calculation- 5 lb of CO2 = 52 moles, Volume ~ 0.2 ft3, Temp1 = 75F, temp2 = 37F. If we use van der Waals gas for CO2's equation of state, P1 = 950 PSI, P2 = 565 PSI. Nothing to worry about!

Did you move the tank from room temp to the fridge? Lowering the temp will significantly drop the pressure in the tank.

Brooklyn Brew Kit Everyday IPA dry hop??

You can certainly dry hop in a primary. I would wait for active fermentation to slow way down, basically wait until you see infrequent bubbles in the airlock (maybe 5-7 days from pitching). As for amount, I would stay under a quarter of an ounce, but that's just me!

    Wow jump on this!

    Nice find, thanks!

Had to dump my first batch

+1 for StarSan and keeping a handy spray bottle of StarSan/distilled water around. Interesting related story- To date my best brew was racked on top of 5x over-concentrated foam of StarSan. (Read the directions too quickly and mixed 1oz/1gallon, should have realized when it foamed like CRAZY)...

    Extract brew OG anomaly

The adjunct definitely adds gravity; it's sweet, probably an invert sugar syrup. I'll ask next time I'm at the shop, for curiosity's sake. The more I think about it, the more it's probably poor mixing. One jug of spring water partial froze, so bits of ice where probably melting near the top...

    Extract brew OG anomaly

Ah, that definitely could be it. I added ~2 gallons of cold water to ~3 gal of wort at 75F. I typically don't stir the fermentor and my other measures where in line with expected values. That won't hurt the fermentation right? I assume the yeasties will eat their way through a malt gradient.

Am I crazy? Hop schedule for pale ale.

Sorry for the delay, still figuring out how the boards work. This brew was a smash! It's called "New House Pale Ale" and brewed for a house warming. We drank about 2/3 of the keg! It's nice that my first recipe worked out. Once chilled and carbed, the malt and hops where much more balanced...

    Extract brew OG anomaly

Hello everyone, I'm relatively new to the homebrewing world, with about 7 brews of varying quality completed. I got all the basics, and my last (a homemade recipe extract Pale Ale) came out superb. Last night I brewed an extract kit that some buddies recommended, 1# 40L Crystal 0.5# US 2-row...

Am I crazy? Hop schedule for pale ale.

I recently did something similar for my first homemade recipe (an extract Pale Ale): 1oz Citra @ 60min 1oz Cascade @ 20min 0.5oz Cascade, 0.5oz Saaz @ 10min I did this mostly to use up extra hops, and it worked out great! Might be the best beer I brewed yet. My FG was 1.013, so it's got a...
