Kegging instead of bottling. What's different?

I do a 4 week primary as well. Allows the yeast to clean up after the job is done. Check out the sticky in the Bottling/Kegging section, there is a good discussion about force carbing techniques.

BeerSmith - BeerTools - Promash. - Which is best? What do you have?

BTP gets better the more you put into it. So if you take the time calibrate all your equipment and put it all in, then you will get better numbers. Otherwise it is just making a guess without knowing what you are working with.

Cold Weather Mash Did Not Go Well

its not the strain, but the potential for diaster I am worried about. i like to limit any unnecessary risk I can when it comes to brew day. But the loss in efficiency might be worth the risk.

Cold Weather Mash Did Not Go Well

I think my cooler is a 52qt, its not one of the 70 qt versions. Insulating is actually a good idea. Might have to look into some options for that. Or suck it up and hull that thing inside.

Cold Weather Mash Did Not Go Well

I think until I have some sort of recirculating/heating system, I might just go simple and do some extract brews during the cold months. I can get a boil going just fine. If I had a pot to heat mash and sparge water, I would do it indoors, but I don't. I started off with a keggle, never...

Cold Weather Mash Did Not Go Well

Tun was pre-heated inside and grain was at 72 degrees, sitting in the house until I put it into the Mash. Is there some way to calculate in ambient to compensate for it? Mashing inside might be an option, but I use a keggle for my HLT and BK, so I would have to add the water then haul the...

Cold Weather Mash Did Not Go Well

I did my third all-grain batch this past weekend and it was about 20 degrees outside. I could not hold temps in my mash at all. I use a Coleman Xtreme cooler, which I know can hold temps, but I guess it was just too cold outside. Has anyone else run into this problem? I am guessing that...

BeerSmith - BeerTools - Promash. - Which is best? What do you have?

You don't need a membership at all to use BTP. If you buy a license, then you are good to go. The membership is for interfacing with their online database to pull down recipes. I never use it. However, after watching some of Bobby's videos on getting the most out of BTP, I love it. It takes...

    Snake Bites banned in England

I've had the poor mans Black Velvet before with Guinness and Cider and the only thing dangerous about it was how easy it was to put away. Certainly wouldn't get you messed up.

    I like Natural Light.

There was plenty of Natty Light, Coors Light, and Keystone Light when I first started drinking beer in college but now it just doesn't do it for me. I will grab a PBR at some gigs when they are on special, but usually go for a local Pale Ale or something from Bell's.

In Support of All Home Brew Stores

We only have on shop in Indy, but it is a fantastic one. Staff are knowledgable, helpful, always friendly. They have a really nice inventory, even if stuff is a little more expensive than online. Most importantly, they are good at building relationships with their customers. I can ask them...

    Is my Mash Tun ruined?

So I bit the bullet and got a 36 quart Coleman Xtreme. Already I can tell it has a lot more insulation than my previous one. Also there should be much less dead space. Now my only concern is whether to build a copper manifold again or just put a stainless steel braided hose in there.

    Is my Mash Tun ruined?

haha, good point. Maybe it just needs to be retired.

    Is my Mash Tun ruined?

I have been worried about that too. It also has more dead space than I would like. It doesn't have the channel like the Xtreme does where it goes down. Maybe I can donate this one to a friend and build a new one. A question about some of the cleaning methods mentioned. I have a copper...

    Is my Mash Tun ruined?

So I was doing my first all grain batch, which didn't go well but that is another story, and at the end day, consumed with frustration, I did something so completely stupid. I left the grain in the mash tun. For a long time. When I opened it I almost lost it. It was something I had never...

High Amount of Bitterness in 1st Brew

its 323ppm, can't remember if that is high or not, but I do have a water softner. Yea, I didn't do anything with it. It was my first brew so I hadn't picked up any software yet. I now have Beer Tools Pro, so hopefully I can avoid this problem in the future.

High Amount of Bitterness in 1st Brew

unfortunately i broke my hydrometer as i was about to take the OG so I don't know. I asked Brewer's Best if they knew what the AA was for the Brewer's Gold was, but she couldn't tell me. Here is the recipe Amber Ale 10-B American Amber Ale Author: Brewer's Best Size: 4.32 gal Efficiency...

High Amount of Bitterness in 1st Brew

So my first beer has finally had enough time (3 wks) in bottles that I can taste it without worrying too much about it being green. I cracked one open last night, had a nice puff of co2 smoke sitting in the bottle. When I poured, it developed a lot of head and spilled over the glass, not sure...
