What got you started in brewing?

So I thought it would be interesting to hear how everyone got into this hobby. Ill start: My ex boyfriends sister was getting married and she was a hippy and liked making things herself. Their family loved wine so I wanted to make her a homemade wine as a gift. After making that and getting...

Do you prefer brewing existing recipes or building your own?

Always my own recipe. I do research other recipes in the style category and tinker around with my brew software but when I share my beer I have pride in it ad want to say that I made it and it wouldn't feel genuine if it was someone else's recipe. Not downing anyone else, just my personal...

    Advice for cocoa powder

I want to make a chocolate porter and I was wondering if anyone had experience with cocoa powder. I know people have said nibs work better but I have powder on hand so I want to use that. From my quick research it look like people use varying amounts in everything from the mash to bottling...

    Yeast starter for cider?

I'm normally a beer brewer and I use queasy liquid yeast with a yeast starter for my brews. Does anyone make a starter for their ciders? If so what do you use?

    cider yeast question

So which of the ones suggested will create a dry cider. In the past I used a champagne yeast and it made my favorite cider because it was very dry. I wasn't pleased with the results from Nottingham because it was at too sweet for my taste

What do I need to use a Pump?

Ya sorry my husband bought the set up as a gift. He said he had to buy the ball valves too. He got them at Home Depot too. Nation wide Home Depot has led free copper fittings. So it's all food grade

What do I need to use a Pump?

I use a pump and I just got high temperature hoses from Home Depot. The downside is they do loosen up after a few uses when they get hot so I use special clamps to keep them tight on the spigots. It's cheap enough so you can buy a lot of it and just replace as needed.

    Funky smell

To me, my beer has never smelt "funky" but I dont know what you consider to be funky. It always smells like carbon dioxide and beer to me. Is it a sour or rotten odor? I would think if it was rancid it would taste bad or off, but I go by the motto "when in doubt, throw it out" What hops did...

Autumn Seasonal Beer Imperial Pumpkin Pie Ale

So how long do I bake canned pumpkin for?

    Apple pie beer

I don't want the apple flavor to be really strong and over powering but I do want it to be present. I'm afraid if I put them in secondary it will be very fruity. Will I lose the flavor all together if I mash it?

    Apple pie beer

So since we're heading into apple season I thought it would be fun to experiment with an apple pie recipe. It's done with pumpkin so why not apples? I want it to be the same idea as the pumpkin where the spices are more dominant than the actual fruit flavor. I was thinking of baking the apples...

    Grains going bad

So worst case scenario what will happen if they were stale and I brewed with them? I've tasted grain before it was milled but this has already been milled. How would I be able to tell if its stale?
