Vanilla & Bourbon Additions to 13% RIS

I used two vanilla beans, split and the insides scraped out, then chopped the husks and soaked in two oz of Makers Mark with one Ceylon cinnamon stick for a 5 gallon batch. That sat for a week then I racked my stout on top of it in a secondary and bulk aged for 9 weeks or so. It has aged for...

My attempt to fine with gelatin didn't work?

I always thought you were supposed to use it after you cold crashed? Am I wrong in doing it like this? I've had fairly good results with this method. What I really need to work on is my patience. My kegs don't last long at all lol.

Funny things you've overheard about beer

My brother told a guy that came into his shop that I brew my own beer. The guy then preceded to ask my brother if I "made hot beer or cold beer?" The only thing I can think he MIGHT have been referring to was lagering, but I highly doubt that. If I was around to hear that I probably would have...

How to make a yeast starter - Pictorial

Short answer: yes. The healthier the yeast the better they work. The better they work the better the beer. Long answer is here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0937381969/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 I have only ever used liquid yeast cultures but I'm not about to switch to dry because its...

How to make a yeast starter - Pictorial

Not a problem. Normally yeast starters are made with liquid yeast cultures so I'm guessing everybody has taken the fact that you would pitch the whole pack for granted. I've never made a dry yeast starter before but it probably can't hurt anything. Not sure if its really necessary since the...

How to make a yeast starter - Pictorial

You will use the whole vial if you're using White Labs or the whole Smack Pack if using Wyeast. And yes, pick the strain you want because you will pitch that yeast (after its done propagating) into your wort. You're basically aiming to kick start the yeast so it's healthier and will ferment...

    West Coast Saison

Yeah I keg most of my beers as well. If they're better bottled and aged for that long I may hold off on this because I really want to get my pipeline up and running. Something I haven't been able to do since I started in march of last year. Phooey. This looked like a fun experiment. Maybe I'll...

    West Coast Saison

Awesome. I may do a version of this this weekend and play around with the hops some. How long was it in the primary? Also what would you think of a first wort hop addition instead of a 60 min with this?

Sounds interesting. Is there anything you would do different a second time around?

    Making Your Own Extras

I would imagine the essential oils you are looking for are boiled off in the same way your flavor/aroma hop additions would act if you put then in the boil too soon. I bet you would have good results with cracking or crushing them and letting them sit over a few oz of vodka during the last...

Looks like the hook for the hanger from a turkey fryer if you ask me. I could be wrong though.

What your pet peeve about Brewing

I absolutely hate that man. Although it hasn't happened to me to quite that extent. I invited over a few friends for some brewdays and they sat inside got drunk and watched football while I brewed for 5-6 hours. Doesn't make sense to me at all.

    5 weeks in secondary

What % ABV did you end up with? I'm assuming that this is somewhere in the 5-6.5% range. I know stuff over like 8% that has been in the secondary for a month or two might have have trouble carbonating since the yeast is slightly stressed and has flocculated out a fair amount. I would probably...

What your pet peeve about Brewing

Not having enough time to get a consistent pipine setup. I would kill to be able to brew twice a month but I haven't been able to make it happen. I am also not a fan of bottling. I only bottled my two first batches then switched to kegging. It took me two hours to clean, sanitize, and bottle...
