Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Big Brother Peanut Butter Brown

Ok, it's now resting comfortably in 46 bottles. Tasting in 2 weeks! There was a layer of floating unpleasantness in the primary, but I opted not to rack to a secondary. I was just cautions racking into the priming bucket, and stopped when the absorption of that layer was imminent. The...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Big Brother Peanut Butter Brown

Not yet. I expect to bottle it this weekend. I'll sneak a taste of the flat beer then, but it'll be a few weeks before I know for sure!

    Why anti-ice?

Aloha all! I see people regularly recommend against using ice to cool wort. Saw a new post just today that said "Just don't do something stupid like dump ice into it" Why the discrimination against icing hot wort? Is it purely a fear of contamination? Or is there some other insidious...

    cooling the wort down

I had this problem with my first coupla batches. I placed my work in an ice bath, thinking that would be "quick." Ended up having to let it sit overnight. I really didn't want to mess with a cooling device, though. Still don't. The hobby already takes more space than I can really afford to...

    What are you drinking now?

Maui Brewing Coconut Porter. Like Hot Chicks on the Beach.

    Brewing my first next weekend

Personally, I'd skip the stainless steel spoon. I've got a coupla wooden ones and a long plastic one that I use when stirring wort during the boil. Fun thing is, since the wort is boiling anyway, you don;t really have to sweat sanitizing the spoon. Clean, yes. Sanitization happens just...

    DIY Fermentation Cabinet

At 30 gallons every 2 weeks, you pass 200 gallons in 14 weeks. That's an awfully quick brew year!

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Big Brother Peanut Butter Brown

Took a stab at this tonight. With subtle improvisation, of course! Was surprised at the amount of PB that survived the boil, just floating crud on the top of the wort. I'm guessing what we scooped off was nearly the whole jar. Hopefully all the peanutty goodness was boiled out!

    Oxyclean...amazing

That's where I buy them! Maybe it's misleading, since I always do 2 batches, I'm buying 7 ft at at time. My BOTs always end up seriously cruddy. I;ve tried high pressure water, but it doesn't do the trick. Even tried running a string thru and using that to pull a scouring pad. Still didn;t...

Attention to detail saves money, aka lets talk about stupid mistakes!

So far, I've not had any real "D'oh!" moments on a brew day. Well, forgetting to take the yeast out of the fridge, but that only cost a little time. Wait, there was the time I forgot to buy ice. Tried cooling the wort in a "tap water bath." yeah, it ended up sitting in the sink overnight...

How long's it been since you tried a new recipe ?

Funny thing... even when I do try the same recipes, I get differing results. So, I figure, I might as well try something new. Lately I've been into dual-batching, making 2 different beers on the same brew day. I generally do 1 repeat and 1 new each time.

    Some questions about oxidation

The oxygen will get displaced by CO2 pretty quickly. As long as your bucket seals well and you use an airlock, no worries.

    Oxyclean...amazing

Funny... I've never found a way to clean a soft tube that didn't involve ending with a haze. I've tried bleach, One Step, PBW, pressurized hot water, and Oxy. Always the same result, junk gone from hose, but haze remains. It's most noticeable in my blow-off tubes. I attribute the...

Bottles and cases for bottles?? Plastic case?

I've never found one made specifically for bottles, but there are no shortage of large plastic containers at your local big box, hardware, or department store. I call them giant Tupperwares, but you know what I'm talking about. Big, plastic, some are clear, some are opaque, some have...

    Weird cleaner / sanitizer interaction

Aloha all! Nothing like the excitement in joining a new forum! Glad to be aboard! I've recently decided to explore one of those hands free, no rinse cleaners. I wanted PBW, but the LHBS was out, so I got One Step. On Wednesday, I put all my bottles into One Step and left them to soak...
