Does CO2 have a bittering Agent Added? Does it affect beer taste?

Easy experiment for you - make some seltzer water. Put 5 gal. water in a keg & carbonate as you would for beer. That's the taste of carbon dioxide without any beer taste. My wife was spending money for seltzer--I told her I could carbonate water for her :-)

    Recirculation techniques

I don't know if mine is technically a grant or not, but my mash tun drains to the brew kettle. I use the brew kettle to increase the temperature, and pump from there back into my sparge arm.

    First Brew, How'd I do?

To pick nits, boiling point actually increases with increasing concentration of sugars (as well as with changes in elevation). But I agree with Squirrels--no reason to measure temp. while boiling unless you want to see if what I said is true.

    First Brew, How'd I do?

This site http://dd26943.com/davesdreaded/tools/convert.htm will allow you to convert your specific gravity read at 85 to a specific gravity at room temp.

    Counter-pressure filling pressure

I don't have the exact filler that you do, but mine is similar. There is a tube within a tube. The tube that goes to the bottom will deliver CO2 to the bottom of the bottle when the 3-way valve is pointing to the gas. Use the purge valve to expel the air in the bottle. CO2 is heavier than...

    Keg Force Carbing Methods Illustrated

I'd say it's best to chill it before carbonating and then keep cold, but if that's not an option then I think carbonating at RT and then chilling before drinking will work better than chilling, warming and chilling again.

    Keg Force Carbing Methods Illustrated

Sure you can carbonate at room temperature. It just takes a higher pressure to get the beer to dissolve the same amount of CO2 at a higher temperature. Gasses dissolve better at lower temps. Here's a table that shows what you need. Are you planning on serving the beer warm or are you...

What is best way to clean hoses from CO2 tank?

I agree. No need to clean if they aren't dirty. If they were, I'd put some sanitizer (Iodophor or Starsan) in a keg, pressurize the keg, turn it upside down, then turn off the co2 and use the bleed valve on your regulator to suck sanitizer back into the line.

    Is it deadly?

The recommended daily allowance for zinc is about 10 mg (http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Zinc-HealthProfessional/). 100 mg daily can be bad for you. I doubt you got that much in your beer. The alcohol probably has a higher toxicity...

    Smack pack didn't inflate

When you say you smacked it, you mean that you located the bag within the bag and broke it open right? If so, then I'm not sure how you would smack it again. I've never had one fail to swell after 24 hours except for one that my friend left in his car on a 90 F day. :o

    This is not a drill...

Here's my version: http://youtu.be/XB0U1pJ5QRg I bolted a cog from an old cassette to a v-belt pulley that was the right size for my drive bar on the mill. Then ran an extra long chain from the cranks on the bike. The bike has long since lost any wheels, so I had to make a stand for it.

    Set-and-Forget... Uh oh! Party!

I'd draw a pint off first to see if there is any sediment. If there isn't any, then having it sit for a while just means you won't have to rock it for as long.

    Did you break even yet?

(off topic) Yes, I studied the biology of tree diseases. I'm happy with my decisions and don't regret not getting the Ph.D. I teach biology and chemistry to smart high school kids, and at the community college. I incorporate brewing into my teaching. There's a LOT of biology and chemistry...

    Did you break even yet?

(off topic) What field are you in? My major professor told me that my research was supposed to BE my life. He was upset that I spent time brewing, woodworking, serving on a local community service group and enjoying my wife's company. I was advised to wake up thinking about my research...

Where is 5 gallons in a corny?

Depends on what you mean by accurate. Erlenmeyers are NOT accurate by lab standards--a graduated cylinder is a better choice. The weigh method is much better, but remember that only distilled water at 20 C has that density. Accuracy may be over-rated in brewing. As long as you brew the same...

Can I brew for my wedding?

You have plenty of time, but I'd be cautious if you haven't brewed before. Lots of people put a lot of pressure on everything going right on this one day. Find someone in your area that has lots of experience brewing and ask them to help. If you are new to brewing, your best bet to have good...
