    Barleywine - efficiency/techniques?

I'd build a second mash tun and mash about 40 lbs of 2-row plus any specialty malts you want. Take the first 8 gallons of runoff to make your barley wine. Sparge with another 16 gallons and make 10 gallons of IPA or similar gravity beer. That's what I do. I can't stand dumping all that sweet...

    Hydrometer help...with pics

As long as you are always reading the same way, your error will cancel out. Want ABV? It's the difference in the readings that matter. Want to know if fermentation is done? You're looking for a change.

Who would you most like to share a brew with?

HBT'er - too hard to decide. I'd have a beer with any of you. Famous person: Mark Twain is the first one to come to mind. He was a smart @$$--I like that.

which pot to get, can't decide

I know you already bought yours, but I wanted to put in a good word for enamel. I've used the same 8 gal. enamel pot for 17 years. The lid has a tiny bit of rust near the edge where I dropped it on cement once. If you're careful, enamel's a great choice. (I've also used glass carboys for 20...

    Please critique my plan

My wife's a little more forgiving than yours sounds as far as decor goes. Maybe you could build me one first -- you know, to work out the kinks.;) Seriously, the design looks great. I might suggest these modifications: It looks like you only need to be able to open access to the tap and the...

    Using Caffeine

Coffee usually has about 200mg of caffeine. Green tea comes in at about 40mg. Source Mayo clinic (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/caffeine/AN01211) . I agree with you that if you get the amounts right, you're good.

    Using Caffeine

Coke zero has 45 mg/16 oz. Red bull has about 2x that much. Coffee comes in about 200 mg. Just make sure you do the math right to get in that range. For 5 gallons (640 oz) you'll need between 1800 and 8000 mg (1.8 - 8 g). Caffeine is very soluble in water, so grinding up some No-Doz will work...

    Keg Force Carbing Methods Illustrated

I'm guessing that when you say stick 45-50 psi in the kegs, you're going to disconnect the gas. If that's right, then how much CO2 you have in there will mainly depend on how much space you have for gas in the keg (the head space). I think it's unlikely that you'll have enough to carbonate...

    I brewed a boring Barleywine...

If you can restrain yourself from drinking all of them, it's really cool to do a side-by-side comparison of several year's worth of barleywines. Like previous posters, I typically go a couple of months in primary, then rack to a cornelius and let the beer age for 6-9 more months. When I walk...

    Need some advice

Well, if they consummate their marriage on it as Homercidal suggests...Might be fun, but I'd suggest being the second or third one :D Sounds like you're a great friend. They'll love it.

    Why didn't anyone tell me?!

I prefer glass to brewing in a bucket, but the blender is a good idea. Now, do you mash them or add them to the boil?

    Washing hands after bathroom use..

I never use the sink in the bathroom--who knows what kind of crap is on the handles (me actually--I had students swab them for class once). Think about this--you wash your hands, get all of the bacteria off, turn the knob off and just reinoculate your hand with whatever crap the last guy had on...

    Mother in laws!?

I'm curious what evidence there is that Christie Brinkley is anything more than a pretty face. I've heard people say she's smart, but I'm not buying.
