Do you really need a steeping bag?

Yes honey... really! They are for brewing!!! Oh, that dress? Well, that's my brewing dress... <ahhhhhmmmm> I mean apron, ya, that's it, it's my brewing apron. The heels? Well, you don't expect me to wear flats with that apron do you??? :p

How full to fill a 1 Gallon growler?

On my 1/2 Gal growlers I fill to the top & remove the bottling wand. Whatever space that leaves has worked well for me. I also use the "pressure caps" like this (4th one down) as they'll handle the pressure no issue at all.

    Sanatizing my siphon....

I'm with the wallpaper pan folks. YES, you want to buy an autosiphon.

    Magic hat #9 clone..??

As a matter of fact, I happen to have my brewlog with me, as I'm hitting the LHBS on the way home. (Still not 100% sure what I'm going to make this weekend) Original (changes) from CloneBrews 1/2# Crystal 60L - 20 min steep @ 150F 5.5# (6#) M&F Light DME .5# (1#) F&F Wheat DME 1.5oz...

Using Pot Met in Fruit Beer

    Won't it kill the yeast?

    Man, I love Apfelwein

I'm just slightly below that temp in my basement, and I think you're on target. I've not measured the FG yet, but the bubbles have finally slowed. It's not cleared terribly yet, but I used an unfiltered cider from a local orchard (heated to 180F for 15min, then cooled) I can't wait to get...

    Magic hat #9 clone..??

I made the clonebrews recipe, but I used cherry extract instead of the apricot. I used 3 oz, and added it to the bottling bucket just prior to bottling. The next time I make this recipe, I'll be increasing the extract to the entire 4 oz bottle. I did, however, increase the malt/hop bill...

    Labeling Carboys

I have an Industrial Sharpie It does rub off a little bit on the carboys during cleaning, but most of it remains. I remark at each new brew session.

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Well, without having looked at this LONG thread previously, I apparently am brewing nearly this same recipe... but I'm using WPL775 English Cider Yeast. 4Gal Fresh cider from a local orchard (unpasturized, unpreserved) - $20 2# light brown sugar - $1.50 WLP775 - $8 OG - 1.064 Nearly as...

    Bottling to a growler?

I'd say yes. Absolutely. My LHBSs have a cap that has a plastic insert (truncated cone shape) that assists with the pressurization. Ipswich Ale (Mercury Brewing in Ipswich MA) has started using these same caps on their distributed growlers. From the yeast at the bottom of theirs, I'd also...

    Sloooooow ferment...

Sounds like my basement at the moment. A batch of cider, and a batch of American Wheat ale. Both pitched on Sunday 12/16, and were fermenting away by Monday evening. The temps in my basement are about 66F, and the cider is at about 6 blurps/min, and the ale at about 2 bl/min. It's...

    What Sanitizer do you use?

Anyone using C-Brite? That's what they carry at my LHBS, and what I've been using on my grand total of 4 brews. The first two came out great! The third is aging in the bottles, and the 4th is in the primary (about a week overdue for transfer to the secondary, but I may just bottle right...

    What's your brewery name?

Murchadha Brewing It's the original source of the Murphy last name. I've a fancy label for my brews, but can't easily post it, until I figure out some sort of free hosting site... (or figure out my 'home web page')

    big brewing day tomorrow

Did a double day brew weekend. Saturday I taught a friend to brew, using my new Beaten Refugee Ale recipe, then brewed a batch for myself on Sunday, along with bottling my cherry #9 clone.

help - i cannot syphon for some reason!

Now that I'm back into brewing for a 10+ year Hiatus (moves, apartments, lost equipment...), I got a auto-siphon. Amazing piece of equipment. So easy. Best "gadget" I've ever bought, and probably one of the cheapest.

    Who is bottling today?

My Ipswich Ale clone went into bottles on Saturday. I can't wait until this is aged to finally taste it! (fully taste, with bubbles & aged).

    recipe for wheat

As I sit here I'm drinking this: Spritz & Brite Hefe (from the LHBS' recipe file) 6.6# Wheat extract (liquid) 1oz Perle (bittering) - 60 minute boil. 1/2oz @ 50 min hallertaur (flavor/bitter) 1/2oz @ 59 min hallertaur (aroma) Safbrew T-58 yeast pitched @ 78F into a 6gal glass carboy...

    Easiest way to sanitize carboys...

I fill my CLEAN 6.5gal carboy with a mixture of c-brite & hot water, let sit to sanitize. This then drains via auto-siphon into the bottling bucket sanitizing all of my small items, (funnel, strainer, spoon, airlocks, bungs, etc). That drains into my small 5gal carboy sanitizing that...

What happens during bottle ageing? Hefe

Jar, I was just down at the LHBS getting supplies for the next batch (Ipswich Ale clone), and talked to the guy that runs the place about this exact issue. (It was a recipe of his that I used) His first question was "How was the carbonation?" My reply of "Not bad, but I'm sure it'll get...
