    Making Your Own Extras

I tried adding pecans to a beer in the boil and the secondary, and the resulting beer had no pecan flavor. I have heard of people having success when adding them to the mash, so you could try that. However most people who i talked to recommended making an extract with alcohol as a few people...

    Make-shift blow off hose

I have made many make shift blow offs, any tubing that will fit the stopper will work. If you cant rig something together than I would just sanitize the area and put a sanitized piece of foil domed over the carboy opening with a rubber band to keep it in place. Make sure the foil is domed over...

Soaked keg lines & taps in santizer too long

I have heard in the past that leaving stuff in star san for too long can leave a haze or film, I believe the solution was some form of acid wash that would remove the film but I cant remember exactly what it was (I believe it was something that I read or heard from John Palmer). If it were me...

    Over Sparging?

Doesn't soft water have a lot of sodium in it? Water softeners work by replacing calcium and magnesium with sodium, unless you mean that your tap water just has a low Ca and Mg content without having to use a softener?

    Over Sparging?

I knew as soon as I said that someone was probably going to tell me I was wrong :cross: I don't have any experience with using RO water with brewing as my water profile is pretty neutral across the board. My only experience using RO is with hydroponics and the pH was always very unstable and...

    Over Sparging?

I use fly sparging but I think as long as you stop before your runnings reach 1.010 you should be good. Below that is when you start extracting some harsh flavors. Also I don't know if using straight RO water to sparge with is the best thing unless your adjusting the pH. Might be very acidic...

    Tripel/Golden Strong Special Recipes

I just tasted my hydrometer sample from my Tripel with apple juice and cinnamon and it tasted awesome! My fiance is a huge fan of tripels and strong belgian beers and she was even more excited about the beer than I was. Hopefully its carbed up by christmas! Will definitely be brewing this one again!

Advice on adding nuts to beer?

So i just tasted the hydrometer sample from my pecan warmer yesterday. It finished at 1.010 and has a some nice warming alcohol too it. It tastes nice and malty but basically no pecan flavor :( I am disappointed by the lack of pecan flavor but I am now determined to do this again and get it...

    Best chiller

http://www.weather.com/maps/news/forecastsummary/uscurrenttemperatures_large.html I know off topic, but it does show you where your immersion chiller will be most effective

    Best chiller

I would consider that cold! But hey I live in so cal so my area is probably warmer than average. Even so I still think 32 is a good deal lower than most areas experience, when you consider the south and south west which only get those chilly temps at high altitudes (or extremely low like death...

    California Hop Growers

Wow escondido!?! If I am not mistaken it gets crazy hot there over the summer. I wonder what varieties of hops they are growing besides the cascade that you mentioned? I would imagine they had to pick heat tolerant strains to grow well in that climate.

    California Hop Growers

When I googled hop farms in California I read something that said that there may be a few small farms still left in hopland, but that the bigger farms weren't around any more.

    Thanks! I'll check it out.:mug:

    California Hop Growers

Anyone know of any Hop farms in California? I know that northern California used to be the hop growing capital of the US before they mechanized the harvesting process, which drove the farms to other areas; but are there any hop farms still operating in the area? Or in any part of the state...

    Aging Jamil's Recipes...

I've made a few of those recipes. Other than the really strong beers and the lagers I would say drink them up as soon as they are carbonated. If your talking fermentation, I always give them at least 2-3 weeks in the fermenter, but I know lots of people who bottle or keg after only a week for...

    BYO Hops in the Hog?

Have you ever cooked with hops? Im curious if you could use it like an herb or spice? I made a pasta sauce the other night with lots of fresh and dried herbs and ate it with a nice hoppy red, the combination was great! I bet you could make a good pasta sauce with some hops added to it; in fact...

    Aluminum pot and oxy clean?

I soaked my AL kettles with PBW before I used them the first time (not knowing any better) and after 20minutes the bottom of the kettle looked like someone had taken a sander to. I thought it was ruined but I cleaned it out, boiled some water in it, and now I use it all the time. As for the...

    BYO Hops in the Hog?

I have not tried to cook with hops before, but it seems like that would make the meat fairly bitter? Any body stuffing their thanksgiving turkeys full of hops?

    Tripel/Golden Strong Special Recipes

Im waiting to see how it turns out, but If the extra ingredients I added have anything more than a subtle background note, then I am going to call it a Belgian Specialty Ale, instead of a Tripel for competition. My inspiration for making a Tripel with some unique ingredients was definitely...
