    black ale

Even though I didnt start this thread...thanks so much for the recipe!!! Definitely a fan of 1554. Recently bought an excellent Scottish black ale called "Old Engine Oil" by Harviestoun Brewery. The label is awesome...it says "Viscous, chocolately, roasty". It was all of the above, and more!!

    Northwest Special

Has anyone tried the extract version of AHS's "Northwest Special" (session series)? It features 4lbs of DME with 1lb of Crystal 10L, Crystal 20L, Carapils® and Biscuit grains. Yeast options are White Labs California Ale V or Wyeast American Ale II. Unsure of the hops. They dont specify...

LME and DME at same time

That makes perfect sense, thanks. I am definitely going to play around with late additions of the LME/DME. Any basic 'guidelines' for when to add late extracts? Just a rough estimate will do. All the kits I have bought call for putting it in at the 60min mark. Looking forward to some...

LME and DME at same time

I recently read another thread on late additions and this school of thought interests me. I am a total newbie, so hang with me while I work this out...as an extract brewer doing partial boils, I am diluting the hops (and lowering my IBU's) when I add my cooled wort to the 2+ gallons of cold...

    Dry hop Question

There is a recent Brewing Network Sunday Session show that covers dry hopping. They mentioned something about using mesh bags. I dont remember the reason as to why it was ill advised, but here's the link to that particular show... http://thebrewingnetwork.com/shows/555

    Three Hearted Ale from Northern

Three hearts IS odd...unless you are an octopus! You could brew some serious beer with 8 arms and 3 hearts.

I wondered that too. However, we thought since the RIS is so dang BIG, if there are in fact any remaining spices after eternity, it might be kind of tasty??!! Who knows. I guess that's the beauty of being a homebrewer!! If I remember in 4 months or so Edcculus, Ill let you know how her beer...

    Russian Imperial Stout-aging question

Hi All, I have a friend who is about to brew a Russian Imperial (extract kit from NB) and the two of us wondered if it was better to age the beer in secondary for eternity and then bottle it OR bottle it after secondary and then age it there for eternity? Recipe: 0.5 lbs. Simpson's Roasted...

Any good Brew Pubs in South Carolina?

I'm in Charleston and although I dont know of any brew pubs in MB, you will definitely have to hit the Mellow Mushroom (pizza place) for a pint or two of WHATEVER beer they have on tap by Coast (brewery here in Chas). Coast beers are great!!! http://www.coastbrewing.com/

    Fermentation Chamber Question

I am converting the spare fridge in my garage into a fermentation chamber so I can control temps better. It's hot here in South Carolina!! Any suggestions as to what I could use as a base to rest the glass carboys on, while inside the fridge? Plexiglass? Lumber?? I am not 100% convinced that the...

My Poor yeast. Do you think it will have life?

The exact same thing happened to me, except my smack pack (right off the UPS truck) was BLAZING HOT to the touch. It took nearly 36hrs for the yeast to get going visually, but all turned out fine.
