    First brew in the primary

So when I transfer to the secondary should I siphon to avoid air contact, rather than just use the spigot? Also, I was under the impression that I was supposed to be checking the gravity quite regularly. Should I not do this? Is there a safe way to do so? I always dump my samples when I am...

    First brew in the primary

I brewed the all grain recipe of the Austin Homebrew Anniversary IPA. It has been in the primary for 3 days now and I am having visible activity in the airlocok. I opened the spigot yesterday and filled my theif to test the gravity. Is this ok to do? The gravity appeared to read 1.032. Does...

First wort goes down the drain

Tried it. It doesn't work without the electirc system connected. The regulator is manual. The only reason the electric system is on there is because it offers an auto option for cooking a turkey. It keeps the temp at a steady 300 and whatever degrees.

First wort goes down the drain

No. It offers a manual option and that is the option I was using. The auto option is supposed to light itself but it was not working. I had the burner up and running after I mashed in. I turned it off including the gas and went to go use it an hour later and it would not work. The electric...

First wort goes down the drain

I met my temps close to where I needed them, my mash tun did not get stuck, drained into my kettle. All ready for the boil, had hops ready, and my fryer would not light. And here's the kicker, I tested it before I started my brew and it worked fine. I have a Saf-T turkey fryer with an...

    Amount of beer

I've read similar posts. I really want me brew to be good but I'm willing to suffer some losses. Hobbies are supposed to be fun. I'm just really looking forward to it. My final decision to be made before I brew will be what beer to drink while I'm brewing. Thank you for the advice.

    Amount of beer

I've done a lot of homework on this. (several months worth of reading, watching videos) Having the freedom of changing the recipe and the taste of the beer intrigues me. My equipment should be here by the end of the week. All I left to do is buy some propane and finish building my mash tun...

Food for thought - Tap Water

What about rust or iron? I have a water softener (that is currently not working) and my water is a goldish, urine color. It's safe to drink if needed, but tastes terrible. How would this do for making beer with; even darker beers.

    Amount of beer

I purchased a recipe kit (Cluster Fuggle IPA) from AHS. It states that there is a total grain bill of 11.25lbs and that it will make 5 gallons. When I use the formula of 1.25 quarts per pound of grain, my converter is telling me I will only receive about 3.5 gallons. Am I doing something...

    Secondary fermentation ????

Maybe I will just use the same recipe twice. First time only in the primary, the second time in the secondary and then compare. Ugh....my funds are almost there, and then I will have my kit from Austin's.

Excited about the beers I just purchased

Here are some reviews of both beers. http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/shorts-pbj/100519/ http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/shorts-uber-goober-oatmeal-stout/81396/ The PB&J, in my opinion has a strong peanut butter aroma and flavor. The fruit flavor is really only in the after taste. It's not...

    Nutritional Yeast

I did some googling and found an article on nutritional yeast. Within the article it does state that it would not ferment. But baker's yeast can be used...? http://nutritiondiva.quickanddirtytips.com/nutritional-yeast-good-for-you.aspx

    Nutritional Yeast

I recently visited a local nutrition store and found Nutritional Yeast. Can this be used in brewing to create alcohol?

    Starter all grain recipes?

Thank you for the replies! The Centennial Blonde sounds good, but I'm tempted to change a few things. Good or bad idea? Haha, I guess it doesn't matter. I'm just excited to get started. I've been enjoying craft beers for a long while now. IPAs are by far my favorite. If anyone is ever in...

    Starter all grain recipes?

Hello! I'm new to the forum and new to brewing. By the beginning of the year (around tax time) I plan on having all of the equipment for all grain brewing. I'll be buying the starter kit from Austins Homebrewing with a second fermentor. This is a new hobbie for my wife and I. I personally...
