    Troubleshooting a bad batch

Thanks doug. For my 5 gallons in the fermentor I used bottled water that doesnt have chlorine it. The only thing is, without thinking I used my tap water for the priming solution..I know 2 cups isnt much at all but my city recently chlorine flushed our water. And come to think of it, the beer...

    Troubleshooting a bad batch

For my second batch I brewed the caribou slobber extract kit, but I used wlp002 for the yeast. My first batch came out good despite the fact that the water I used made the bitterness a little harsh. This batch has a kind of tart taste that takes away from the malty goodness you'd expect from a...

    Reusing bottles question

Hey everyone. I will be bottling a batch in a few days and was wondering if using PBW to clean the bottles from my last batch is absolutely necessary. Immediately after drinking each beer, I rinsed the bottles thoroughly with hot water. There is nothing visible left in the bottles and there is...

I havent heard of that yet(Ive only been brewing for a couple months or so)but it would definitely save money and more equipment to deal with as you said. Ive just heard on brew strong in the dms episode that the faster you get the temperature below 170(I think) the less chance you have of DMS...

    Extract brewing methods

Thanks everyone. I wont adjust the hops now. And the reason I'm changing it up is that my first batch has a harsh after taste and I dont believe it is from the hops. After doing a lot of research I believe it is from the water. I've read a lot of positive experiences with distilled/RO water so I...

    Extract brewing methods

Hey all, I will be brewing my third batch tomorrow and want to try a couple of different methods. One being late extract additions. So I will start with 1/3 of the LME and add the rest 15 mins before the end of the boil. I will also add 20% less hops since the gravity will be lower. Also, I will...

    Switching to all grain

Thanks for the replies, all great ideas but I think I like your idea best Minky. So you're saying i should just batch sparge instead of getting another cooler or is there a way to fly sparge with the kettle?

    Harsh aftertaste

Breezybrew, Yeah, I know my tap water is hard so I used the artesian..I looked at the report and it said "nd" on nearly everything so I figured it was soft enough. Guess I missed the bicarbonate somewhere or didnt do enough research. Do you use distilled water now?
