How to use a wine theif?

Yea, that's what i've been using... I get plenty with the plunger... I just thought the wine theif would be nicer because the autosiphon drips a little... My wine theif drips too! Oh well, I wasted 5 bucks, not the first or the last time :) Anyone want to buy a wine theif? $2.00 :)

How to use a wine theif?

Yea, it took 6 draws from a 5 gallon carboy to fill the hydrometer tube. It would be impossible from my 6.5 fermenter. Throwing this thing away.

How to use a wine theif?

Yep, its open on both ends

How to use a wine theif?

I can do that, but I dont get enough liquid, I guess i'd have to do it 3 or 4 times. I was thinking it was a one step operation because they are advertized as "easy", I guess its just a case of things not being what I expected. I got so used to using my auto-syphon to "draw up" the liquid that...

How to use a wine theif?

My theif looks kinda like this... thrusting doesnt really do squat for this POS http://www.brewersartsupply.com/images/glassthief.jpg I lied, its also not a fermtech I dont think, its a glass tube. It came in a hydrometer cylinder type case, maybe i'm supposed to use that with it for...

How to use a wine theif?

I must be stupid, I cant figure out how to use the glass wine theif that I ordered. It is only about a foot long glass tube. It doesnt go far enough into the carboy to get enough liquid for a hydrometer reading... Am I missing something?? It is the fermtech glass wine theif...

Ok, i'm going to try natural lagering...

OK, I purchased it.... $75.00 SHIPPED. I know you could buy a fridge at this price, but for the convenience and electricity savings I think its worth it. Plus its always handy to have a temp controller around... Here's my new setup...

Ok, i'm going to try natural lagering...

Man i'm so f'ing frustrated. I cant BELIEVE they dont make a fish heater that goes below 65 degrees. All of the industrial immersion heaters kinda suck too. I tore an old one I had up and it appears to be controlled by a small microcontroller, so modifications would be nearly impossible.

Ok, i'm going to try natural lagering...

Doug, thanks for the idea. This generates a constant power though right? So the idea is to put in exactly the amount of heat that it is losing on a continous basis using the potentiomerter. This is the closest so far and would probably work with minimal adjustments, however i'm still holding...

Ok, i'm going to try natural lagering...

This i'm not worried about... I am concerned about fermentation temp's only, so if I can get a fish tank heater to go to 52 degree's i'm good. I keep my chest freezer slightly below 32 degrees, pretty much giving a liquid temp of 32 degrees. So after fermentation I will move it in there....

Ok, i'm going to try natural lagering...

I wonder if you could actually submerse a fishtank heater IN the carboy!!!!

Ok, i'm going to try natural lagering...

http://www.circlepet.com/products/Aquarium_Heaters.htm Fish tank heaters, amazing! These are completely submersible.... I imagine al you'd need is the 50 watt glass heater!!!!

Ok, i'm going to try natural lagering...

Brilliant!!! I wonder if a fish tank heater can maintain water in a stryofoam cooler @ 52 degrees, this could provide PERFECT lagering throughout the winter!!!!!

Ok, i'm going to try natural lagering...

Well I am not worried about temperature changes throughout the year as I only plan on lagering during those specific 2 month period (that happens 2 times per year) where the "average temp" is in the range of lagering temps. So with the concrete, some insulation and water surrounding the carboy...

Putting pressure on a keg and storing... Co2 stored at 30 degrees, keg at room temp..

First, sorry to all for posting so many things.... But I have lots of questions... Ok, so I am going to rack to a keg and put 20 lb's of pressure on it for storage. Here's the thing.... I am going to store the keg at 60 degrees, but my Co2 tank is stored at 30 degree's. Since the keg when...

Ok, i'm going to try natural lagering...

I opted to use Saflager-23 for the lager yeast that I will be brewing this weekend.... Accrding to the website: http://www.fermentis.com/FO/EN/pdf/SaflagerS-23.pdf#search=%22saflager%22 Recommended temps are 48.2-59.0 F with a perfect temp of 53.6 (of which I am at 52(Near Perfect!)...

Ok, i'm going to try natural lagering...

I just checked the temp of my coffee mug that is sitting in my garage on the concrete (3:50 PM) . It is at 52 degrees... It is NOT surrounded by water or anything and it is an extremely small volume of water that is probably pretty suseptible to temp change. I will check it again tonight...
