    All Extract Weizenbock?

I have made some extract hefeweizen batches that turned out great. Its all about the yeast and temperature control to get the flavor profile you want. I have used both the weihenstephan liquid yeast, and the Dry Danstar Munich. Good results with both, but the temp controlled weihenstephan was...

Critique my 2.5 gallon BIAB plan

Be careful not to oversparge the grains.

Too Many Brands On The Shelf

I didn't know that, but I the problem I had was AB putting all those people out of work simply to protect their market share. That type of ruthless business practice by industry giants is why people turned to craft products in the first place.

Too Many Brands On The Shelf

Most likely the owner stopped buying RR because AB bought them out and shut down the brewery in PA. For those that are slow on the uptake, that means that AB put all those people in Latrobe out of work and the company out of business. Then they took the branding they bought, ie the name...

Ptfe tape is getting shredded by the threads on ball valve

I know that when I disassemble my rig, there is is junk caught in the threads. If fact, I am getting ready to tear mine down now and do a thorough cleaning prior to brew day tomorrow. Unscrewing threaded fittings and reassembling isn't really a big deal, and I would rather do it, than have...

Which is why I said I'd choose it over those others. :u:

Sounds like you may have got hold of some Budweiser. lol

Too Many Brands On The Shelf

The one thing working on side of craft brewers is that there is plenty of market share still to gain. I think that is what is spurring these big boy buyouts of larger craft brewers. They are losing market share everyday, and they are getting nervous. Remember what happened when independent...

The worst beer I have ever had in my life...

This is the first beer that came to mind when I read the title of this thread. Awful. But since I tried it, I have found worse. I hate to say the brewery because some of their other beers are very good, but it was called Saloon Pilsner. Truly awful. Now I know why the cowboys in the...

Too Many Brands On The Shelf

This. I realize that it is very expensive to make a high gravity, ridiculously hopped IPA in California, but one would think, that prices would be lower with all of the competition in the market. The problem you point is a big one, and one that I have noticed. When mediocre beer is...

Ptfe tape is getting shredded by the threads on ball valve

Good advice. If you can't find the one V-fib mentioned, this one is also great. http://www.oatey.com/brands/hercules/products/thread-sealants/tape/mega-tape Its sold at plumbing supply houses like fergusen.

Ptfe tape is getting shredded by the threads on ball valve

This, then then 3 wraps. Re tape each time you disassemble. Then hand tight plus about a half a turn with a wrench. The system isn't under pressure, and there is no reason to really crank down on it.

Measureing water value when transfering with a pump

I use the same method. In my case, I have a Malco ss 48' yardstick that is primary used in sheetmetal shops.

First all grain batch not so good

That may have led to your issue, but I am not sure. I have a fermenting bucket with a lid that apparently doesn't seal tightly. Brewed a batch of pale ale with zero airlock activity, but the beer fermented completely and turned out fine. That said, I kegged it on day nine or ten, had I let...

    Hydrometer vs. Refractometer

I switched to the refractometer, and haven't looked back. The ease of use sealed the deal. If I am three thousands off I'll never know it.

    First time doing brewing

This is the best advice I got on the pre-hopped kits when I first started out. Don't boil that can of hopped Muntons extract, add it at flameout as seabrew suggests. Also, I don't know what size brew pot you have, but if you are going to use a regular 6 quart kitchen pot, you may not have...

New Brewer -- What if I don't actually Lager my Lager?

The new edition of BYO has several articles about fast lagering. I think I am going to try their method.

    All-grain Brewing Alone

I have brewed extract, partial mash, BIAB and traditional all grain, and with the exception of a few batches, I have brewed them all alone. Given some planning, I don't think all grain is any more physically difficult than any of the other methods, though it will take longer than an extract...

    Adding Water vs. Not

Yes, for a five gallon batch. For a full volume boil, couldn't he BIAB a 3 gallon batch on his stove top? If he has a gas range with a large, higher BTU burner, he should be able to pull that off. To me, it seems like cooling would be a bigger issue. Though he could run an IC from his...

New style Coopers IPA kit... any good?

Those are great tips. Yes, all grain and partial mash will be better, but I have made some pretty good beers with hopped can kits. One I like, is the Coopers wheat can blue moon clone. Fast, easy and pretty decent results. Wife loves it. The best tip I ever got with the pre-hopped cans...
