Whats your carbon footprint... about beer, really.

So are you saying that wind magically makes CO2 lighter than the surrounding components of air? Does wind or heat somehow alter the mass of a CO2 molecule to make it lighter than an O2 or other component of air? If that were the case wouldn't all the plants on our planet have evolved to...

Whats your carbon footprint... about beer, really.

You are a wise person. We need people like you involved in environmental issues...not nutjobs who don't understand the gulf of mexico oozes more oil naturally (which is dealt with naturally) than is spilled or that CO2 is heavier than air and most of that carbon winds up right where it came from...

Whats your carbon footprint... about beer, really.

I'm not going to go all political or anything...I'm just going to propose a simple experiment to show the average person what happens to the vast majority of CO2...Take a 2 cup measure and place about 1/4 inch of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) in it. Now pour 1/2 cup of vinegar into the same...

Any place to get free bottles?

The easiest way is to just tell your friends that might drink good beer to save their bottles. I got enough flip top (gasket sealed) bottles to do at least a case that way...and I'm not talking grosch either I'm talking big bottles ;) Makes bottling day easier. Of course they will expect to...

Can I add lemon zest to the primary?

Thanks all. It will be in the fermenter 7 days on Sunday. I'm just going to pop the lid, dump in some zest and let it sit another week to two.

Can I add lemon zest to the primary?

I understand doing a secondary for fruit additions, but is it really necessary just to add the zest of a lemon? I'm leaning toward the "it's not worth the trouble" angle but if someone can explain why needs to be done I'll listen.

Can I add lemon zest to the primary?

I'm brewing a Lemon Corriander Weiss and the instructions say to add lemon zest to a secondary and transfer on top of that. Can't I just put it in the primary after a week or so and leave it?

    Midwest Supplies

My wife bought my starter kit from there this Christmas. They sent the wrong ingredient kit and gave 2 options. Send the other one back on their dime and they'd send the right one or...keep it and they'd send the right one at 1/2 price free shipping. That is service...of course I kept the...

Added aroma hops 15 minutes too early

I'm guessing you'll get beer. The 60 min boil with extract is mainly for hop utilization, so you didn't get everything out of your first hop addition...but most extraction happens early so guess what...it's going to be fine. It may not be quite as bitter as it should be, but it will be really...

Which Beer Took Your "BMC Virginity"

Haffenreffer Private Stock! Waaaaay back in 86. You knew you'd had enough when you could no longer figure out the riddle under the cap.

    Beers popular with the ladies?

I'd start with a basic hefeweizen and add some lemon zest after fermentation winds down. Just soak the zest in a little vodka and dump her in.

    SWMBO vs. Homebrew

Meh, mine just wants to know when the Creme Stout is going to be ready to drink....go figure.

Cost vs. Labor - Before I do anything!

I actually meant as a tax writeoff on the "hobby expeneses" line on a 1040A. I thought we were talking economics ;) There is a legitimate deduction for hobby expenses as long as you do not make money from it. I didn't realize we'd gone from brewing at home to stealing a keg....although that...

Can't brew a light colored wheat beer, help?

From what I've read (and my limited knowledge) LME in itself doesn't cause darker beer...if it is fresh. LME does darken with age and can do so pretty q= uick at high storage temps (say 80+ degrees). That said I'm currently drinking a cream ale brewed with LME that is about as blonde as you...

Cost vs. Labor - Before I do anything!

I couldn't resist ...A sunk cost is just that. It is money already spent. You don't base future expenditures on sunk costs...aka "I've already spent $2000 on this car, so I have to fix it to get my money back"...that is a bad decision. But homebrewing isn't about business which is why I...

Cost vs. Labor - Before I do anything!

It depends on what you like. I like Belgian beers...especially the ones I drank and smuggled back from Belgium. Those are around 10-12 bucks for a 750ml bottle...., or 10-12 bucks a six pack (but the best ones are in the big bottles....they just taste better to me). I can brew it (not...

    Partial boil procedural question

I've only done 4 so far, but they've all been topped off with tap water so I don't see an issue. I don't pre-chill my water though, but it's about 58 deg out of the tap (out town taps a 600ft well). I do let it run for a minute or so before I top off, but other than that, I figure if there's...

Here's my kit - Is this a good start?

I'll say one more thing about midwest. I'm a cheap bastard. When I was looking for my kit I researched all the online sites and after factoring in shipping, the midwest kit was by far the best deal. I got a fermenter, bottling bucket, glass carboy, carboy and bottle brushes, airlock...

Give her a few beers and ask her to bellydance?

Here's my kit - Is this a good start?

I got my kit from midwest as well (thanks Santa!). I got the "everything" kit with a glass carboy and an ingredient kit. Well, I've used the carboy once in 4 brews, and that was mainly so I could free up my bucket for another batch. I'm glad I got it, but now that I've read some information...
