    Priming causing off flavor?

Hello fellow brewers, I have been having an issue that I combed through the forums to try and figure out myself but I gotta ask. Here's the situation. I have a few brews under my belt now and have been running into a particular flavor. The BEST way I can describe it is "sweet" but "buttery"...

    Cinnamon Apple Wheat?

    Cinnamon Apple Wheat?

Shane - I was hoping to avoid the cider flavor which is why I wanted to add the cinnamon, too. However I don't know how avoidable it is. I agree, the spice is what will give it the "apple flavor" much like a pumpkin ale. Perhaps Apple flavoring from my home brew shop could work better if I am...

    Cinnamon Apple Wheat?

ryan810cows - Thanks! So for the LME base - I used a base for a wheat ale recipe from my local home brew shop. I used it before for a different recipe and gave the beer a great base. (So I cheated a bit haha). I've used the steeping grains many times. The rest I chose from working with the...

    Cinnamon Apple Wheat?

Thanks for the input! I was wondering about apple juice vs. fresh, you think the juice is the way to go? Happen to have an idea of how much or what kind?

    Cinnamon Apple Wheat?

Alright, let's try this again! Hey everyone, I was thinking of experimenting with a wheat beer and adding flavors of cinnamon and apple for the fall. I can currently only do extract brewing so I was hoping you could give me feedback on my recipe. (This would be my first recipe I constructed...

    Infected?

Thank you for the responses - I certainly hope it's not fruit fly larvae! If it is, I'm assuming that would be grounds for dumping? I'm glad you brought up the head space because I've been having an issue when transferring from the primary fermenter (plastic bucket) to the carboy... I always...

    Infected?

Yeah, there was no dry hopping - all the hopping was done in boil and these guys just showed up the other day

    Infected?

So I'm on my 6th batch so far and I brewed a Saison. I'm wondering if the beer is infected - it's been in the secondary for about a week and a half now. I'm not particularly worried, but I didn't see these tiny pieces in the beer before. What do you think?

    Lemon Zest addition

Afternoon, fellow brewers! I thought I would head back to the threads because you guys have been extremely helpful to me. This weekend I will be brewing a partial mash witbier following a recipe from my local HBS. I've been making slight tweaks here and there to these recipes as I go and...

Low starting gravities on IPA's - too much water?

I didn't realize they could be off by so much! Thanks for the advice, I'll try that before my next brew to see if that's the issue.

Low starting gravities on IPA's - too much water?

After topping off the wort to 5 gallons in my primary fermenter, I measured out 4 cups (0.25 gal) and then added that.

Low starting gravities on IPA's - too much water?

I have a regular bucket for the primary fermenter with a 5 gallon marker. As for the additional water there was no math, if that's what you're asking. I just measured out an extra .25 gallons using measuring cups. lolcats - Thank you for the advice, any help or thoughts are appreciated. The...

Low starting gravities on IPA's - too much water?

Yes, both recipes called for 5 gallons, both had low SG, and the most recent one was topped off to 5.25 gallons which was measured out. Thank you for the replies so far

Low starting gravities on IPA's - too much water?

Yes it was from an extract kit. The previous IPA I brewed used the correct total volume of water and still came out with a low gravity - there was no boil over or any spillage but again, I did boil the wort in 2.5 gallons of water instead of the recommended 2.0.

Low starting gravities on IPA's - too much water?

Good afternoon folks, This past weekend I brewed a White IPA using extract and found that the starting gravity was much lower than anticipated. The target was 1.067 and the actual came in at 1.052. I used extra top off water to bring the total volume to 5.25 gallons and stirred it very well...

Tincture vs. Boil for White IPA orange peel

Hey everyone, This weekend I will be brewing a White IPA. The recipe calls for 0.5 oz of dried orange peel and 1 oz of coriander to be added to 1 cup of vodka on brew day. That would then be added to the brew on bottling day. I'm new to brewing (3 batches under my belt) and am having trouble...
