How should i get the beer from the carboy into the test tube for gravity reading? I'm worried about contaminating it.

Thanks! The book does say add additional ounces of maple syrup if the original gravity is low. It was .020 lower than target OG. It calls for 8oz of maple syrup, should I add 10-12oz?

Thanks marubozo! It's a 4 1/2gal batch. Another thing, the test tube was only half full of wort when I checked the gravity after adding the water. Could that be an issue? Thanks again!!!

Brewed a generic brown ale from Sam Calagione's Extreme Brewing book. All went well but ended up with only 3.5 gallons of wort in fermenter after a 4.5gal start. Target OG was 1.072, but my 1st reading was 1.093. Added 1 gal of cool tap water to fermenter and took another reading, 1.052! I...
