    Grain question

Damn, this kit has really turned out to be a disappointment. Ok I will be waiting until I get my hands on an 8 gal + kettle. Thanks for the all help, everybody.

American Pale Ale Red Chair NWPA clone

Sweet, thanks. This is my first time using beersmith as well, I didn't quite understand everything that I needed to set in order to get exact calculation on how much water I should be using, but I have a better understanding now. AZ, you recommend mashing higher than 155* which is what you said...

    Grain question

Ok, thanks, I've got my mash temp adjusted to 160* and I'm about ready to start this. Seriously last question now, when I bought my kit, it included a 20qt boil kettle... which is too low of a volume for all the water that I need to use with my mash... I want to avoid buying a bigger boil...

    Grain question

And also, on beersmith it says my estimated abv is 6.9% but my actually abv is 4.7%.... What am I doing wrong here? The brew should be higher than 4.7%..

    Grain question

I got ya, I'll keep it simple and do a single infusion batch sparge and follow the recipe given, no additions... I do have one last question before I start, though.... The creator of this recipe says that he mashed at 155*, but says in order to be more like red chair, he recommends a higher...

    Grain question

nobody has any thoughts on the double infusion?
  7. H

    Grain question

disregard my last question, beersmith says how much water I should use. I'm thinking of doing a medium body, double infusion mash, does this sound like a good idea? I want more efficiency in the mash, get all those sugars out, so I was thinking a double infusion would be good/possibility.

    Grain question

efficiency? How exactly do I know my efficiency? And what exactly does efficiency mean in brewing? Also, this is my first all grain brew, would you be able to tell me how much water I should use in my initial mash and my wort? Should I just use 5 gallons in the mash, then add water to my...

American Pale Ale Red Chair NWPA clone

Thanks for this, AZ. I'm going to try this as my first all grain brew... We'll see how I do. I'm going to add an additional pound of 2-row to increase the OG... I'll post how it turns out. How much initial water did you use in the wort? I want to know how much h20 I should expect to boil down...

    Grain question

Ok, thanks for quick replies. I will use the specialty grains, then. Wasn't quite sure what the point was, but now I know. I am going to up the OG by adding a bit more 2 row, I'm thinking 1lb more and I also want 1 oz more of centennial @ 60. Would that be a good amount to add if I just want...

    Grain question

I'm about to start my first all grain brew. I have done 2 extract brews, and am switching primarily to save a bit of money. I am going to be brewing a deschutes red chair nwpa clone, and I am using this recipe: Created by AZ_IPA I can find big (50lb) bags of 2 row grain on craigslist...

    what do I do now?

I have been brewing a iipa for a little over a month now. 10 days ago I transfered it to the secondary carboy and dry hopped it. I just tasted it and I like it so I'm ready to move on to bottling. The thing is, I just moved to a new residence and I can't find the instructions sheet that came...

My IIPA tastes like malt liquor

Ok, Like I said, I already did that a few days ago, maybe it wasn't enough? I used 2 oz of cascade and 1 of centinel in the intitial boil then the other day I added 2 oz of boiled amarillo and I added 2 oz of citra as a dry hop

My IIPA tastes like malt liquor

I'm not sure all of those. The recipe came from a local brewery. My first brew was their IIPA kit, and this time, I just bought the same ingredients, except I changed the hops and I filtered the hops out of the wort before adding to the additional carboy. So grain bill : ?? not sure, but it...

My IIPA tastes like malt liquor

Hello everybody. So I've been working on my second batch, it's an IIPA. The original gravity was 1.084 and the gravity as of yesterday was 1.013. The brew is at 21 days now. First 20 days were in the primary and yesterday I transferred to secondary carboy and dry hopped. My first brew was...

    Adding bittering hops after fermentation

I have a double IPA going right now (1 week fermenting so far) and I think I didn't add enough hops into the wort boil. I know that dry hopping is more for aroma, not taste, so I need a way to add more hoppy bitterness to the brew. I searched around about boiling hops and adding this to the...

    adding more yeast.....

The only reason why I want to rack to secondary so soon is because I want to get more hops into the beer asap. I didn't put enough hops into the boil for the second batch and I thought dry hopping would be better to do sooner that later, but if it's a good idea to leave it another 10 days, I...
