    Exploding Swing Tops

I basically did this last night. Carhartt jacket, jeans, full face helmet, deer skin gloves. Opened them all up on the shelf, then transferred to a container. Everything happened pretty safely. Nothing exploded. I measured the gravities of the beers. Most were 1.010 with a few being above...

    Exploding Swing Tops

With swing tops on, the blue bottle weighs 727 grams, the brown weighs 733 grams. Without swing tops, the blue weighs 706 grams and the brown weighs 712 grams. This leads me to believe that this was solely caused by some kind of over pressurization, despite only blue bottles suffering. It is...

    Exploding Swing Tops

OK, so I measured the thickness of the exploded bottle to be between 0.12 to 0.14 inches depending on the spot. What do you make of that guys? What's the typical thickness? I'm pretty certain it fermented all the way out. This was my Grodziskie, so it had a FG of 1.014, which is what I aimed...

    Exploding Swing Tops

Just to reiterate. I don't bottle condition. I bottle already carbed beer from a keg. I haven't had a brown bottle do this, only the blue cobalt ones. I thinking these bottles might not be strong enough. At the very least, they seem weaker than my brown ones. When I get home I might see if...

    Exploding Swing Tops

I bottle from a force-carbonated keg, so I know the pressure cannot get over 10Lbs at the same temp. That being said, I also have never had a brown bottle burst. I'm thinking the case of cobalt blue ones I ordered were just not up to snuff. At this point in time, I think three have busted...

    Exploding Swing Tops

And yes, they were quite expensive, but no where near the cost of an emergency room visit.

    Exploding Swing Tops

I have 9 of 'em. I have three filled. I'm thinking I'm not even going to move them. I'm just going to quarantine that part of my house off for six months. The shards that came from that one are just too scary to think about. Many large shards made it pretty far. The whole bottom came off...

    Exploding Swing Tops

Hey guys, I come to you today with a very important question: have you ever had an unopened swing top liter bottle of beer/homebrew explode? I must ask this as one of mine just did this. No one was hurt thankfully. I bought these cool looking cobalt blue 1 Liters and have rarely use them...

    Storing a Crowler help

OK, the crowler made it back with me. I was actually able to bring it into a secure facility by telling the guard it was my lunch!!! They didn't even look in the bag. Kind of sad. I guess I am just used to visitors having their bags checked no matter what they say is in them. So, I didn't...

    Storing a Crowler help

Haha, cooler it is. I won't have time to go back to the hotel. Could've planned this trip a little better, but it shouldn't put a damper on things too much. I just need to get a cooler and some ice...

    Storing a Crowler help

Hi guys, Hope you've all been doing well out there. In short: can a crowler stay in a hot car in Phoenix from 8AM to 11AM? I am out traveling on business and I wanted to bring something back for a bottle share. Got a crowler and then realized I have to take my stuff from my hotel on the last...

    More Diverse Brewing Styles

Well, guys. Your ideas have definitely helped me plan out a few more brews. I've started brewing for competitions to get more feedback. Because of that, sometimes I'll just brew what they want, style wise. So far this year I have brewed a raspberry wheat(wife loved it, I thought it was...

    Keggle Sparge Arm

I use mine as a continuously recirculating arm and a sparge arm. I've never had it clog, not on one hole. However, I have had gravity play interesting tricks on me. When I sparge or recirculate, I have the liquid running quasi-slow through there. If it is slow enough, I'll notice that the...

    Mash and sparge volumes

Well, crap. I guess my last message didn't lost. It said something like, my boil-off rate is 0.5 gallon per hour. Even with 1 gallon per hour, there would only be a gallon of sparge water actually going to the BK and I doubt another 1.5 gallons of sparge water would be necessary to push the...

    Mash and sparge volumes

Hey guys, I decided to convert a German recipe from kg to Lbs and liter to gallons, using a German brewing terms dictionary. It ended up using 14.5 Lbs of grain and the recipe called for 5.5 gallons of mash water and 2.5 gallons of sparge water. The 5.5 is consistent with 1.5 qts/Lbs ration...

First all grain brew day! (And first brew ever!)

Also, that bock was still delicious as all get out, though I did have to add more yeast to bottle carb. Something told me the original yeast died in the freeze. Thankfully, the freeze was just during the lagering stage.

First all grain brew day! (And first brew ever!)

While I do strongly agree with this statement, try to keep it simple for the first batch. Focus on the most important: sanitization after boil and hitting the OG. In future batches, you can add a complex thing one brew at a time. Complex things like making a yeast starter to get pitching...

First all grain brew day! (And first brew ever!)

I like to plan everything in advance. I measure out hop additions to the boil in labeled cups during the mash. The labels will read "60 mins", " 30 mins", etc. I would consider making a yeast starter. Even putting it in a container with water and DME that you shake every now and again will...

Should I bottle this weekend or next?

I agree with this so much. I used to have two bottling buddies. They both usually helped bottle, but every now and then I'd just have one helping. Other one was busy. We had it down, one sanitizes bottles and hands em to the filler and then I'd be handed a full bottle to cap. After I lost...

Psi in keg keeps dropping down

I just kinda hold the plastic piece and put a present wrench on the nut part. It was a little difficult to get tight, as there isn't much to hold on to. It is best to not put the gas disconnect under too much stress from a short tube.
