    Best compliment yet

I got my first complement on my first brew... in fact it was the first beer opened! After only 5 days in the bottle I popped one open tonight to test and a friend informed me it "tasted like an expensive beer." In Isla Vista, where everyone spends their money on terrible faux-beers like...

    Tasted first brew

Oh, I wasn't thinking it was done now. I watched that video circulating around here of the 1-2-3 week bottle conditioning openings... I just opened one after 5 instead of seven days, and I'm planning on opening one next friday then the friday after that, just to see the difference and better...

    Tasted first brew

So I poured the first brew of my first batch tonight... it's only been in bottles for 5 days but is fairly carbonated and tastes great in my opinion! I gave my friends a few sips of my Amber Ale got the compliment, "This tastes like expensive beer!" Haha nothing too specific but I'm ecstatic...

    Hop usage

You convinced me to buy a larger brew pot before I do this brew... As for the late extract addition, how much would I want to add for the beginning of the boil and how much to save for the late addition? Would it be better to add the light and amber at different times?

How Common is a broken [miscalibrated] Hydrometer

Oh no. Pikes are brewing beer now??? Natty and Keystone sales are going to take a hit!

    Hop usage

I'm using 5 lbs light DME and 3 lbs amber DME for fermentables... maybe adding in a little dextrose to "dry out" the beer to allow the hoppyness to come out (anyone done this?). I was wondering how you all would recommend using the hops I got: 2 oz Chinook 2 oz Cascade 1 oz Amarillo 1 oz...

    FG to ABV conversion question

You should download the demo for BeerAlchemy... it's free for 30 days or 7 uses (I'm just keeping the program open on my Mac) and you can tweak recipes and techniques and get really accurate information.

    FG to ABV conversion question

    Beer Alchemy gives that a 1.051. (1.051-1.010) X 131= 5.37% ...unless I'm leaving something out?

    Is this batch ruined?

I was interested in this so I did a little search... here's a light-on-the-science explanation I found: "WHY does an excess of sugar inhibit the yeast? My guess would be that the osmotic concentration of the sugar gets so great that the yeast is unable to get enough water for growth. As fresh...

    Is this batch ruined?

No, yeasties love sugar. They even have two ways to process it (with or without O2)! People sometimes add a maltose/dextrose mix to increase alcohol 1% w/o off-flavours... I don't see how a little extra dextrose would cause any?

    Bottling folly

I have a racking cane and tubing which makes for a siphon but not an auto-siphon that you pump to start. It seems like that's easier but it's not that hard to start a siphon yourself... maybe I'll pick one up in the future when I have some extra cash laying around. Thanks for the reassurance...

    Bottling folly

So when I racked to the bottling bucket, I used tap water to fill the siphon and create the suction. I let it drain into a pot until beer started coming out before moving the tubing over to the bottling bucket, but is there any chance that the tap water would infect my beer? I microwaved the...

    Starter Kit Question

I've also heard 22s carbonate/bottle condition faster? Anyone had that experience? I can't comment on that for another 2-3 weeks
  15. jrakich87

    Starter Kit Question

Go for the 22s! I just bottled my first batch, and the actual filling isn't really a pain (I thought it was fun), but cleaning/sanitizing is a PITA!!! I used empty Stone 22s (from the Arrogant Bastard and Russian Stouts I drank already) so I consider them FREE (I woulda just thrown them out...

    Bottle Drying

Thank God. I was freaking out for a minute at the thought of having to dump my first batch! I'll call them right now, I hope it doesn't delay my order... I got an extra carboy to start my next batch and I'm antsy! I figure if I start brewing a few more batches it'll put me at ease and I'll...

    Bottle Drying

Yes I did the 1oz bleach in 5 gal H2O then added 1oz vinegar.... I did not rinse with water but let air dry for more than an hour.... AM I GONNA DIE IF I DRINK THIS BEER? I was sure he said that's no-rinse at that concentration, I hope I'm not wrong.

    Bottle Drying

I'm looking for some Star San locally... would any hardware store have it? I know it was made originally for the dairy industry but is it only packaged in small quantities for homebrewing supply stores? I really don't wanna drive 45 min for this stuff and I forgot to place it on my order from...

    Bottle Drying

Ya it's been almost an hour and it looks like they're all about dry. thanks
  20. jrakich87

    Bottle Drying

Well I didn't, I used the owner of Star San's instructions and made an effective bleach solution because I had the materials already so it's cheap and I have a scale so I measured accurately. Anyone know dry time? I put them to dry in 2 boxes that I sprayed down with sanitizer and covered them...
