What to do with the oats? Advice Needed.

Well see, that's the thing. I was really hoping to stick to the extract + specialty grain instructions as much as possible, while still getting as much out of the oats as possible. In other words, I don't want to do the "full" mini-mash if I can avoid it. Is there a way for me to do a mini-mash...

What to do with the oats? Advice Needed.

Thanks PT. So should I mash the oats and 6-row with, say, about 3.5 L of water, and steep everything else according to the recipe? Should I reduce the amount of steep and sparge water to account for the removal of the oats? And then just mix the two worts together in the kettle?

What to do with the oats? Advice Needed.

    Craft beer in Dayton Ohio?

Dayton actually has quite a few good bottle shops. Jungle Jims, for starters. Check out beeradvocate.com for a complete listing.

    Just realized...

I'm sorry, but I would not even think about bottling something that could possibly contain broken glass. The batch has been dumped.

    Just realized...

Well thanks to you guys, everything was going great with my first mini-mash. That is, until my thermometer broke inside the brew kettle, spilling mercury and broken glass into the wort. My first homebrewing disaster. I was, and still am, so disappointed and discouraged. I could use some consoling...

    Just realized...

Boy I'm glad I posted this. I'm pretty sure I was adding the 6 lbs of DME into my strike water calculation like a dummy. 4 lbs of grain x 1.5 quarts water = 6 quarts, or 1.5 gallons. That makes much more sense. Thanks guys! Brew day is tomorrow! :ban:

    Just realized...

...that I can't make the Rye Pale Ale I bought ingredients for because of equipment restrictions. This was going to be my first foray into partial ("mini") mash. However, my ****ty electric stove can barely get three gallons of wort to a boil; a full six-gallon job would be impossible. So aside...

When (sufficient) patience is not an option

Given that the carbonation is your most important factor, I'd go 3 in primary and 5 in bottles. Just tell the caterer to pour slowly and leave the last sip in the bottle!

    Football Season

Ah, football season. Nothing like it. I plan on brewing a rye APA to drink during Buckeye games. The name? "O-Rye-O State Pale Ale." Yes I know, I'm very clever. See you in New Orleans! Go Bucks!

Exploding Barleywine Bottles: My Latest Failure

Dude, every one of your posts is hysterical. I am sorry for your loss, but at least you got a great story out of it. Thank you for giving me some laughs.

Recipe Suggestions - Honey Wheat (extract)

Thanks for the input, sir. For the sake of time, I'm going to run with no honey malt this time. But if it turns out missing something, I will definitely seek it out next time. I'll report back with my tasting results. Cheers.

Recipe Suggestions - Honey Wheat (extract)

Yes I know, I got the recipe from you! :D I replied to it on the original thread but nobody wanted to answer me. :( See https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f70/honey-balz-spring-wheat-244476/ Unfortunately I did not have access to honey malt. The LHBS guy suggested I up the amount of honey...

American Wheat Beer Honey Balz Spring Wheat

Going to brew this next week, but need to tweak it a bit due to ingredient availability and my insatiable need to tinker. This would be my first attempt at straying from a written recipe. I'd like some feedback on the recipe and process. Fermentables 6.6lbs Wheat LME (2 full cans) 1.5lbs...
