    What's in my beer???

Did you try using a different glass, and rinsing the glass out with cold water before pouring the beer? Maybe that glass just had soap residue in it. I would try that before jumping to any conclusions about the beer itself.

Recipe Suggestions - Honey Wheat (extract)

Not terrible, but not great either. CrookedTail was right about the honey malt being a crucial ingredient. If I brew this one again, it will be more in line with his original recipe. I used the zest from two small oranges at the end of the boil, but it wasn't all that noticeable in the end. I...

Which bittering hops should I use? Recipe advice.

I was leaning toward the Nugget and Warrior as well. What about combining the two at the 60 minute mark? Is a half ounce at 60 mins really enough of a bittering addition for this recipe? And to jfr111, it wasn't that I disliked the Cascade for bittering necessarily. In face, SWMBO really...

Which bittering hops should I use? Recipe advice.

OK, so I brewed an all-Cascade rye pale ale and was pleased with the result, but I think it would benefit from a different bittering hop profile. I have the following on hand and would like to use some combination of them so I don't have to buy any. a. Nugget (1/2 oz) b. Sorachi Ace (1/2 oz)...

    Enhancing the Chocolate/Coffee/Vanilla taste

Do not boil coffee beans, it will give the beer an acrid taste. If you want to use whole beans, add them to the secondary as a "dry-hop." I have read that star anise gives a licorice flavor. Not sure how to use it, though.

Tips for getting airlock pulled out of lid?

Thanks guys. I figured I was doing something wrong. In my excitement, I have a tendency to push it in too far too fast. :ban:

Tips for getting airlock pulled out of lid?

Did a search for this and came up empty. My apologies if this has been discussed before. I have a hell of a time getting my airlock pulled out of the hole in the lid of my primary bucket. I have even cracked the lid by pulling on the airlock so hard. Am I just pushing the airlock in too...

What to do with the oats? Advice Needed.

No reason to think it has not been tested. It's just that in the research I have done, the general concensus is that oats should be mashed, not steeped.

What to do with the oats? Advice Needed.

Yeah I thought that was a bit peculiar as well. OK thanks for all the suggestions. I'll report back with my findings.

What to do with the oats? Advice Needed.

Thanks again PT. I did my first minimash a few weeks ago and you're right, it wasn't that difficult. I may try to mash just the oats and base malt together. So my question now is, how should I account for the base malt addition? Do I need to remove some of the DME or LME from the recipe? If so...
