What does your LHBS do to keep you coming back?

I love that place. I just went this afternoon. Yeah, they're about 20 miles from me, but I plan several brews and get a few months worth at a time. Last time I emailed a big list of things I needed and it was all waiting for me when I got there. Today I just got a few things but I was headed in...

    Show us your SWMBO...

I don't have a SWMBO, unless you count my daughter, but this is my ugly mug Untitled by bonbontrumpeter, on Flickr

    First Party

I'm not exactly drunk, but I have had a little to drink - enough that I'm questioning whether I should be posting in the forums I usually frequent. I went out with some friends the other night and when I was talking about my beer and having them taste it a friend said she's going to have a...

The 13th step to recovery - Homebrewing.

That's pretty cool. I find that I enjoy making beer more than I do drinking it. I mean, I do like beer a lot, but I REALLY like making it. If I had unlimited free time/money I would brew a *lot* more and probably give it away (we're just about at our saturation point, I think, with two...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2011?

    +5 Milk Stout _________ 31535

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I think I'm going to try to do either the Irish Red or the Milk Stout I have ingredients for. Or maybe I'll just stick to bottling. This weekend so far has not been very productive for me so I might not get to brewing :(

    Am I an alcoholic?

I never drink more than two beers at a time, and rarely ever three in a day. That said, I have a pretty consistent two-a-day habit. One around 4pm when I start relaxing after a busy school day and another one with dinner. I just consider it kind of like a (way better) alternative to soda, which...

    Tonsil stones...

Eep! I hate these things. I get one a few times a year. I usually spend 20 minutes gagging in from of the mirror trying to knock it loose. I think last time I decided a cotton swab works best.

Thoughts on this un-spiced pumpkin ale?

How'd this turn out (providing it's done)? Was the molasses pretty strong? I'm thinking about making a pumpkin ale but I don't like the idea of overdoing the spices

Adding oatmeal to a porter extract kit

Haha...that's very disappointing. Oh, I see now that my recipe says "Steep grains for 45 minutes, rinse with 1 gallon of water at 155," etc, and I assumed that was mashing, even though they called it steeping. Weeell, then, I will have to make an oatmeal stout the next go. I'm assuming this...

    New Baby Brew

Hahahah. We just had our first in June and I couldn't sleep for about three days solid. The fourth day was iffy. The first week I think I got about 20 hours of sleep total. I had a beer a few hours after the baby came, but unfortunately it wasn't my beer, because I didn't get around to bottling...

    When should i worry?

As far as I'm reading, that was 7 days ago that he originally pitched yeast. Is it safe to just put more yeast in there? For some reason I had an impression that unfermented wort could go bad fairly quickly (as in, days). I'm a total noob, though, so can't say that I know ...

Adding oatmeal to a porter extract kit

Mind you, my oatmeal stout isn't finished yet, so I can't say how it turned out, but I mashed the oats (a pound) with specialty grains (another pound or so) and mashed them in about 1.25 qts/pound of grain in a giant grain bag that lined the entire pot. I heated the water to about 160, mashed at...

    LME vs. DME... I'm sold

Sheesh, wow!! I pay $1.75/lb for LME and 3.90/lb for DME. It's about twice as much for me to brew with DME (~12 for LME and ~22 for DME, assuming 7 lbs of LME needed and 5.6 lb for the DME).

Introducing my: "WTF Else Could Go Wrong?" Ale...

I will be so enjoying it when my baby is old enough to start having an earlier night-time sleeping schedule. Right now I shudder at the thought of brewing after she goes to sleep (which is around midnight). I am in school full time and my brain is fuzzy enough as it is. :drunk: Thankfully my...

My beers all taste the same.

I find it much more endurable to clean all my ("new," labelled) bottles before bottling day. I did clean bottles and bottle for my first batch but I'm not planning on doing that again! For the ones I just drank homebrew out of I just rinse really well and check for deposits in the neck. I store...

    How to cook beer?

No experience here, but maybe it will be hard to transfer amounts from one gallon to five gallon? I mean, from what I know about baking, you can't always just double/triple/quadruple the batch without making some adjustments (especially salt!). Maybe doing a batch and trying one thing...

    Orange Zest

Mmm..that sounds good. I just did some looking around on adding grapefruit flavor, you might try searching for that info. Let us know how it turns out. I'm drinking something right now that I can imagine some orange flavor in. ETA: If you look below this thread, there are a bunch of threads on...

Did i mess up my batch?

If I was experimenting I'd probably start with a smaller batch! Maybe you should sanitize, too. I'm not really sure what you're making, but it doesn't sound like beer! I have no clue.
