    Group Buy in Chicago #8

I've only brewed one batch since I picked up my grain from the last group buy! But if the man says "stock up," then I stocks up.

Georgia FS: 40 Plate Chiller, 3 gal Better Bottles, and lots of stainless steel bits

I'll take all of the camlock caps (male and female) if they're not yet spoken for.

    Pappy 12 Year?

WL Weller is good stuff. Even their cheaper "Special Reserve" Bourbon is a very good house whiskey.

    keezer or fridge?

I can fit three ball lock cornys and a 5lb tank in my Haier kegerator. I know the Danby kegerators can fit 3 as well, but I'm not sure if that's with the tank inside. Obviously this doesn't necessarily help if you're looking to roll your own, but you may be able to find either of these models...

Size of Greenlee knockout punch for 1/2" barb

I'd have to go home and check mine, but I believe you want the 13/16 knockout punch for 1/2" inner-diameter fittings. See, e.g. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f170/what-size-greenlee-punch-weldless-ball-valve-339595/ EDIT: I see that is a conduit punch, in which case it makes a 7/8" hole, which...

Best way to aerate wort just prior to pitching yeast

If you decide that you want to go pure O2, you can always just purchase the O2 regulator from Williams, as that's all you're missing from the O2 kit. Which I just ordered, thanks to this thread.

    Chicago Newb Seeks Advice

Also, as somebody else in the thread mentioned, homebrewers LOVE to talk shop. I doubt very much you'd be a burden to any homebrewer you talked to about getting started. Hope you can make it to the class!

    Chicago Newb Seeks Advice

Lethargic (or do you prefer Walrus?), You need to be a brewing-level member, which currently includes Trial Members (during the trial period, obviously), Apprentices, and Brewers. There's no class fee (you need to buy the ingredients, a grain bag, and a fermenter/lid, though!), just the...

    Chicago Newb Seeks Advice

Hi Lethargic, I'm a member over at CHAOS, so I'm biased in that direction. I have had good experiences with both Brew & Grow locations, although I never could get their mill to give me consistently decent efficiency. No problem once I started crushing my grain at the club. The great thing...

Need advice on a beginner kit..

GeorgiaTiger makes a great point. Particularly if your friend wants to occasionally brew smaller batches, there is nothing at all wrong with the LBK as a fermenter. My first extract (non-Mr. Beer) batch, my first partial mash batch, and my first all grain batch all fermented just fine in my...

What is your cost per pint?

Now that I buy most of my base malts and hops in bulk, I'd say around $0.55/pint for an average gravity/hopped beers, up to around $1/pint for a high gravity IIPA with a pound of hops in it. I could get my costs down a bit more if I could reliably wash my yeast, but I always end up racking my...

FHBS - Black Hops Sale 2012!

Thanks John! Got my hops super-quick and I even made a last-minute addition to my order that they accommodated. Great stuff. -Adam

Dry hopping in the keg - flush with CO2 first?

I have very limited experience with dry-hopping in the keg, so please take this advice with a grain of salt: I found that dry-hopping at serving temperatures resulted in very little hop aroma in the beer. However, I may not have had the beer on the hops for long enough; I had a party and kicked...

    Microbrews etc in Chicago.

Revolution in Logan Square and Haymarket in the west loop are good brewpubs. The Revolution brewery (separate from their brewpub) has free tours Wednesday through Saturday. If the Pipeworks guys are brewing, you can probably just walk in and say hi to them. They don't have a tasting room or...
