Local shop giving away wort -what would you do with it

I wish I werent working this weekend, it would be a bit of a drive just for free wort, but I could have made a fun weekend out of this offer easily!

Changing 15amp to 20amp outlet in garage

When you are wiring a whole house you can save a few bucks by using 14awg instead of 12awg. 14awg is rated for 20a, however that's peak and continuous draw at that rate may overheat the wire and cause a short. According to code your overamperage protections for 14awg wire shouldn't be higher...

Fermentation Chamber build, witty title coming soon.

As an update, with three "active" carboys in the chamber the temps on the newest batch #9 are remaining stable as fermentation is vigorous. Batch #7 (8 days old) was rotated to the lower rearmost position and has stabilized around 66, which i consider an acceptable amount of deviation from the...

What do you use to insulate your fermentation chamber temp probe?

I use a few layers of foam packing material, all taped together over the probe on the side of a glass carboy

Fermentation Chamber build, witty title coming soon.

Another week, another brew! The temperatures for the chamber stabilized as fermentation calmed down. I moved batch 7 down below with batch 8 and now batch 9 is taking the top spot. I'll enjoy seeing how the temperatures change with two stable carboys and one soon to be vigorously fermenting carboy.

Fermentation Chamber build, witty title coming soon.

The next major steps involve lighting and probably a raspi to control this vs my two inkbirds

Fermentation Chamber build, witty title coming soon.

Here is the chamber after I added a 3gal carboy on the 4th, I still have a carboy of water in the back for stability. The carboy on top is the controlled one and has stayed within 1 degree of 64, the 3 gal carboy has consistently stayed around 69 which is actually the low end of that kits...

    Diabolo Extract Kit

A quick update.. I made a starter and pitched the packaged yeast into that since I read that brewferm has their own yeasts yada yada, I made the starter and it was clearly active so I ended up using the questionable packet of yeast after adding it to a starter. I added the rest of my 1 lb DME...

Strange bubbling activity - Temperature change or Dry Hop!

And don't worry about dry hopping too early, as long as the bulk of fermentation is done you'll be fine. I even dry hopped a beer when I pitched once and it was tasty after conditioning for a few weeks!

Strange bubbling activity - Temperature change or Dry Hop!

Bubbling just means you have a higher pressure inside the carboy and is not indicative of fermentation by itself. If you warm the wort it will expand slightly and vent, also a higher temp may restart fermentation if it stalled from the cold night. Also I have noticed that dry hopping may...

    buying tool capper glass bottles

I only have a wing capper https://www.google.com/search?q=wing+capper&espv=2&biw=1422&bih=687&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjXytDE2drNAhVFzz4KHSmTAIIQ_AUIBygC I have a few different models of wing capper from various donations, but they all work just fine. If I were bottling every single...

relay controlled fermenter : what am I doing wrong?

Im not an expert in the matter, but I dont think you would want to use one of the I/O pins to drive the relay in the ON state. It depends on what sort of current it takes to hold the relay ON and what sort of current the I/O pins can deliver. I would likely tie the relay power to the power...

    Diabolo Extract Kit

I have been brewing BIAB all grain since I started, but I recently acquired a Diabolo can as part of a bulk equipment buy. I want to make this up today and I know that prehopped LME can be made without a boil, but since its an old can I feel like the hops may have dissipated a bit. I also want...

Going to the Charlotte NC area

As far as "interesting" brews go, I'd check out Farmhouse Brewing http://www.freerangebrewing.com/#on-tap I dont think their website is uptodate, however they normally have a gruit or other beers based off of local produce and ingredients they can acquire. I personally was scarred by Lenny Boy...

Fermentation Chamber build, witty title coming soon.

Whelp, I done ****ed up! I had the fridge plugged into the secondary temp controller on the water jug and since its the new inkbird wifi module (that still hasnt worked on wifi for me) I didnt realize that you set a high and low temp instead of a target and a variance. Anyways, last night when...

relay controlled fermenter : what am I doing wrong?

I cant imagine that a compressor rated for 1.5a would spike high enough to kill at 10a relay. If the 2nd relay works, why not hook it up to see if that will work. I probably would have just wired the relay inline with the AC input to the fridge so I wouldnt have to tamper with the inner wiring...

Going to the Charlotte NC area

I live in Charlotte (NoDa, oddly close to NoDa brewing) Belmont is about 25min driving (on a good day) from NoDa. It is however a dense area brewery wise: NoDa brewing Birdsong Heist Free Range Brewing Legion Brewing (Plaza Midwood area) [EDIT] I have to include Salud Beer Shop on the brewery...

Fermentation Chamber build, witty title coming soon.

The test results last night showed that while the unit wasn't able to cool the large volume of air quickly, once the test volumes reached target temp they stayed there. I brewed today and below is a pic (pre blow off tube) showing a full carboy in the front at pitching temp and a carboy of...
