    50 gallon boil

You will probably have to build your own burner stand with a few burners on it unless you can find one HUGE burner. Your gonna need huge BTU numbers and your gonna need to insulate your boil kettle. Your biggest issue is going to be a mash tun to hold 2 sacks of grain plus specialty malt. I...

    Dumb idea?

you could NEVER get the wort through that filter without a pump pushing it. It absolutely will not flow.....well, I guess if you had a day or two then it would go through, but I'm assuming you want to make beer in one day, not 3.

How thin can I go on my sparge?

You can use as much water as that cooler will hold. I do it all the time. I mash in with enough water to get half of my preboil volume regardless of the qts per pound, which I can honestly say I've never even taken the time to figure out. I always mash in with enough water to get half of my...

    All South Jersey/Philadelphia area brewers

National Homebrew Day is quickly approaching. Our club has thoughts of renting an area to brew this year since BeerCrafters has closed. Our thought was that to make it worthwhile, we'd like to get more brewers involved. The sight will be in Turnersville less than 2 miles from the original sight...

    Lancaster/Reading/Allentown PA grain group buy?

Pleaseforgive my ignorance on GF beers, I have some questions

I'm not a celiac, but have friends that are. I'd like to make them a gluten free beer. Rice is gluten free. Could I use sorghum as a base and a lot of rice to try to get away from the sourness? I was also thinking that using somemaple syrup and making it into a maple brown ale would...

Stuck in a 50% eff rut.. I would like to use a lifeline, phone a fellow HBTer

IMO, you should be sparging with more water. Forget the qts per pound method and just aim to get half of your preboil volume. Your efficiency should go up with that one step alone, then rinse with the other half after you drain your tun. definitely have the lhbs run your grains through twice.

South Jersey/Philly Group Buy... ROUND 2!

I'm confirming my half sack of munich. I'm going to pay aluminumpark directly and he'll pay for the whole sack. I've worked this out with him already. Is there anyone in the Turnersville NJ area that could grab it for me and I could meet them to grab it.....or even anyone between McGuire...

South Jersey/Philly Group Buy... ROUND 2!

How about a 2 pallet order? Lol. We can take at least 6 sacks, maybe another 10 total. We'll get in on the next order. I can't imagine being able to fill another pallet. If anyone wants to split their 1/3 sack of specialty, let me know.

South Jersey/Philly Group Buy... ROUND 2!

Our club has a 40 gallon kettle and a mash tun to match for doing 30 gallon batches....and a burner to push it all as well. We have access to a mash tun that will hold at least 6 sacks of grain, maybe more. We can easily do 150 gallon batches, quite possibly over 200 gallons at a pop if we...

South Jersey/Philly Group Buy... ROUND 2!

I'll split the munich with you! If you need to fill the pallet then our club will take some. I'm going to be on the sidelines to let everyone else get a chance first. Let me know how many sacks you need to fill the pallet.

    Help improve my efficiency...please!

I'd do a couple of things differently. First, check your thermometer to make sure it's correct. next, I'd sparge with more water initially. I try to get half of my preboil volume from each sparge. I think adding more water initially will get your efficiency numbers up a bit. How is your...

Bulk grain buy in Philadelphia area? (existing or interest in starting?)

Yeah, our club could probably support another 8 or 10 bags. We found a loading dock (a club member has one at work) to use as well. I think to make it a great value, we need to fill the pallet. If you get something going we'll take some grain.

Why can't you just tip the cooler a bit to drain it all out?

Wow, don't any of you taste your spent grains? I drain my tun and while the wort is coming to a boil (usually about 15minutes) I tip my tun and let it sit. Just before the wort comes to a boil I will drain the tun. The sugars are way way way higher than you think they are. Probably about the...
