    cleaning bottles

I haven't found a beer bottle label and glue that wouldn't come off with a good soaking yet. For wine bottles, on the other hand, maybe 1 out of 20 the glue will not come off, no matter how much oxy or ctsp you use. For those, I resort to naptha/lighter fluid. I guess Goo-Gone is just...

    bottling timetable

I just bottled my first batch and it took me about two hours, from getting everything ready, mixing in the priming sugar, through bottling and then clean up. My bottles were already pre-cleaned. I used a pump spray sanitizer thingy, that Lorena mentioned, with StarSan and hung the bottles on a...

    Storage for dry yeast?

Lalvin says that you can refrigerate or freeze their dry yeast for greater storage stability. Let it come up to room temperature before rehydrating. I assume it might be the same for other dried wine yeast companies. Lots of the LHBS around my town do not bother to keep their wine yeasts in...

    Starter Behaviour Question

Thanks guys. I used to think I was quite patient, but I am going to have to acquire a bit more patience :) It's no wonder that brewing is a good task for monks. After 18 hours I have a bit of surface activity and the airlock is ticking over a few times per minute. There is also, what I...

    Wyeast2112aftersixhours

Let the pack warm to room temperature for a couple of hours, then smacked it. Didn't know what was really going to be inside there, but it is just a plastic bag inside, not some fancy capsule.

    Starter Behaviour Question

I smacked a Wyeast 2112 Californian Lager pack this morning, and after about six hours it had blown up like a puffer fish. I boiled two liters of water with two cups of light DME for fifteen minutes, along with a pinch of that Wyeast yeast food. This was placed into a sanitized 2 gallon...

    Avery DesignPro 5 LE question

Cheers. ;) Here it is on a bottle. This was using an Avery knock off from worldlabel.com. They sent me a bunch of samples. The silver foil is probably too expensive to use normally, but might be nice for people to use when entering competitions or giving away etc. Also I got some...

    Avery DesignPro 5 LE question

This is one I just made for my first batch of beer. I will only put it on bottles that are going to be given away or hang around for a long time. It uses the Avery floppy disk label and is laser printed rather than ink jet, thus the lack of colour. SWMBO has been using slightly larger...

    Avery DesignPro 5 LE question

Yes, but for printing you would probably simply print from inside DesignPro, otherwise the print won't line up with the sheet of multiple Avery labels correctly. You want to be able to export to JPG so that you can post images of your labels here and brag about them :)

    Avery DesignPro 5 LE question

I can't find a "save as" feature in DesignPro light. I just did a screen capture PrtScn and then used the Gimp or Windows Paint to paste in the image. I can then crop and save as JPG or PNG.

    swing top bottles

Fischer is a French beer. It comes in swing tops, but I also think they export it in a non swing top. I found one the other night in someones recycling box. I have never tasted it. http://www.epinions.com/content_100858171012

First beer - Fall seems too soon

OK, the paranoia is over and I bottled this batch yesterday. The beer did not really clear that much in the secondary, although there was about a quarter inch of trub at the bottom. The final gravity was 1.010, before I added the priming sugar. After adding the sugar, it had risen back above...

    Poor fermentation start!

Thanks. My wife makes wine kits, and they seem to start bubbling straight away. That's where my expectation came from I guess.

First beer - Fall seems too soon

I wanted to start with something really easy, a Festa Brew Cream Ale kit, but all I could find in town was a RJ Spagnol's Brew House Cream Ale. My first batch is mainly just to see if my cleanliness and sanitization is up to par. The kit calls for 8 liters of water into the primary followed...
