How much time is needed for aeration?

My first brew I didn't aerate at all but fermentation was good. My next two batches I did aerate by shaking for a couple of minutes before and after pitching and both beers tasted great. This last batch I shook the carboy for only about 30 seconds to a minute before and after pitching. Now after...

How much time is needed for aeration?

10 minutes? I have only shaken for 30 seconds to a minute before and after pitching. I use bottled water and haven't had a problem yet. Granted I have only made 4 batches, but no problem yet

OK, I couldnt wait and I cheated.

After brewing only 4 batches thus far I have already developed a tradition of taste testing at day 10:D My first brew sucked bad (actually I tasted that one at day 7) and I had to dump my sample bottle at day 11 it was good. Brew 2 and three were good at day 10 and my latest which I tasted...

    straining hops

Well as my post said...I am new at this also. I only dry hopped my last brew which is still in bottles and hasn't been finished conditioning yet (so I haven't tasted the final product). But my taste sample on bottling day was great! I dry hopped by using a sanitized muslin bag. I searched...

    Steeping grains

Yes, getting your method down takes some time it seems:) I'm still green at this and juggle two pots. I steeped my grain in 1.5 gals of water which I kept between 150 and 170 degrees. In another pot I heated another gallon of water to 170. After 30 minutes of steeping I removed the grain bag...

    straining hops

I'm fairly new at this also and this is probably no help to you right now, but I bagged my hops before dry hopping for this very reason. I sanitized a muslin bag and some fishing line as well as a couple of marbles for added weight to sink the bag. I made sure it wasn't too big to fit through or...

    more question before brewing

I use supermarket bottled water and buy around 6 gallons which costs me under $5. Sunlight = "no good." I put a dark colored tee shirt over the carboy. If you have a plastic bucket I don't think it matters. I have been doing that but don't think I will be anymore. I don't have a real good...

    Infection from dry-hopping?

You know...that tubing freaks me out. I clean it immediately and then sanitize it and then let it dry but it always seems spotty and has a residue feel to it. I get so anal I want to purchase new tubing everytime I brew. (actually I did on my last two:o )

    Steeping grains

Yes, that is what I have read also...kind of my point. I just didn't know how to put it....you know us noob's:D

Extract addition in last 15min of boil?

I recently did a late extract brew adding half at the start and the other half the last 15 minutes of a 90 minute boil (LME). I didn't adjust my hops and the reason is that is why I did a late addition in the first place....more hop utilization. I remember reading in BYO that extract brews...

    Aeration Question?

I pick up the carboy, cover the mouth and shake like a mother! I then pitch and repeat. Then I need a rest and a brew.

    Steeping grains

That sounds very simple. I may have to give that a test run.

    Steeping grains

How much does the amount of water matter also? I've read 1.5 gal per pound (I could be mistaken) yet Palmer demonstrates his example using 3 gallons with a recipe that contains 1-1/4 lbs of grain.

    Steeping grains

I have used steeped grains in my brews and have stepped them in 150 -170 degree water then sparged with clean 170 degree water into my brew kettle. My LHBS only steeps their grain in the water (1.5 gals) that is heating for their extract boil as that usually takes about 30 minutes or so to...

    Cooling Wort

This has nothing to do with the thread but I just noticed your screen name "Benny Blanco.":D I love that and use it all the time. "Benny Blanco from the Bronx!" It sometimes goes right over peoples heads.

Relax, don't worry, have a home brew

*That about says it all.* Aside from all that I was just amazed at how haphazardly he seemed to do it all; especially when it came to sanitizing. Meanwhile I'm sanitizing my hands everytime I touch something and "re-sanitizing" items that have already been sanitized and a whole bunch of other...

Relax, don't worry, have a home brew

What got me was that watching that I would have thought for sure he was contaminating everything:confused: :D he says that he never had an infected batch in 23 years. Sometimes he only used water (hot, not boiled) to sanitize!! Come on now....that hose has to be dirty:D

Relax, don't worry, have a home brew

For those that have concerns about infecting your beer or sanitization, this should make you feel a bit more relaxed. Talk about simplicity!

    Vodka in airlock?

Since I top off with bottled water and that is what is already in my brew, that is what I fill the airlock with.
