    Flavour "detection" threads or articles?

Brew Chem 101, about as basic a book as you might find, but one that covers off flavors pretty well. Also has a kiddie pool introduction to other brewing science, malts, hop components. Designing Great Beers and New Brewing Lagers are excellent semi-rigorous books to improve homebrew technique...

    NHC Category Help

Well experienced judge here in Arvada - if you feel like getting a bottle my way I'd be happy to give it a taste and offer some feedback/ category help.

    2014 Peak-to-Peak Pro-Am

I'll be judging. It's usually a good judging crowd. Low carb on a thick beer like Yeti might hurt flavor, mouthfeel, and aroma scores, as it's important both for balance and lifting the complex aromatics.

So what score in a contest would you consider disappointing?

I don't believe that is so; perhaps you've mistaken a 'rule' that some competitions apply for a BJCP rule. BJCP doesn't care much how comps are run.

    Active Denver Homebrewers Clubs?

Keg Ran Out Club (KROC) is north of Denver, they meet monthly at Quirky's and have a good membership following and active email group. New prez is trying to have more brew days and outings this year. Check this for info on other clubs (http://www.homebrewdenver.com/). There are lots of small...

    Beer Competition Category Question

One of my favs, but good luck competing in Am. Wheat/Rye with a clone; the high hops presence is likely to get dinged by judges who aren't familiar with the beer or the range for the style. Most judges will expect a very lightly flavored beer with a wheat presence (which does come through nicely...

    BJCP standards for IIPA

Also remember palate fatigue. The fifth 80 IBU sample isn't going to register as bitter as the first.

    BJCP standards for IIPA

BJCP judges don't always use standard taste buds like you or I.

    Competition Question for Judges

Yup, it's odd. Can't explain why that comp gave out so many medals, but the BJCP doesn't set rules re: awards. Most competitions award 1-3 + possible HM per category - sometimes a full BJCP category, sometimes multiple or less combined or divided. Might depend on number of awards available or...

    BJCP Exam

The BJCP is pretty explicit about what to expect, see the exam center. If you're taking the tasting exam you will be sampling 6 different styles from almost the whole Guidelines range (excepting specialty etc). You'll fill scoresheets as you would in a competition and those will be graded...

    Final gravity for belgian quad

Getting the high vols of CO2 you'd typically find in a Quad (or any Belgian beer) might do a lot to reduce the impression of sweetness when it's all done.

    My first competition results

Link to BJCP Competitions Schedule Most competitions you can mail entries in from anywhere. Local comps may have drop offs near you so your entries won't get 'bottle sick' from shipping. Some have public awards announcements; for most comps it would just be boring to watch if you're not a...

    BJCP Tasting Exam

From a grader and proctor: Don't count on the "two flawed, two commercial, two middling" or similar rules. The exams I've participated in don't reflect this anymore; you're just as likely to see outdated commercial examples, excellent homebrews, or blends of random beers for each of the exam...

    BJCP Tasting Exam

Getting the proctor sheets seems a bit odd to me, since those were written by someone other than the exam-taker. Most exam organizers are good about scanning and returning scoresheets to the original writer for comparison when the results come back.

What's the Highest ABV Beer You've Brewed?

Imperial Belgian Barleywine, OG 1.133 to 1.018, so somewhere in the 15-16 ABV Dregs from Rochefort and Weyerbacher Quad

    Sam Adams Logshot

They seemed to have done a pretty poor job communicating this time around. I emailed a number of people about judging and SA left me hanging, the multi-year organizer of one site wasn't given an exact date until a couple weeks before judging.
