    Pippin Varietal

I had a bottle of Royal Pippin from Abermarle ciderworks,a few weeks ago,it was very good. It was the only bottle I bought out of the 4 tastings offered. I am pretty sure it was just pippins.

    The Interconnected Beer Chart

This this link at another site, not being extremely versed in beer styles ,origins etc I found it kind of neat. Don't know how accurate it is, but it is fun http://worldfamousdesignjunkies.com/posters/beer-chart-rap-chart/attachment/wfdj_popchartlab_theverymanyvarietiesofbeer/

    BIAB Question

He is adding a sparge. "few minutes while I'm heating up 3.5 gallons of sparge water to 170 in a seperate pot. " For Aussie style BIAB i would stick with the higher figure. Plan on a little longer mash (i do about 75 min) and then mash out for ten min at 170. If your preboil volume is a...

    BIAB Question

That calculator uses the standard volume of water for an all grain mash that is assuming a sparge later to make up the volume. I don't think there's a calculator for BIAB. You have to work it backwards. Start out with your finished batch volume and then add water for the boil off and then add...

    BIAB Question

Assuming it all fits. yes. Good thing about a real full pot is that it holds the mash temp better so that's good. Figure .125/ gallon absorption rate for each pound of grain and a gallon for the boil off and you should hit your target volume. As someone said earlier, mark your pot with a punch...

    BIAB Question

I do no-sparge BIAB with a 5 gallon pot and make 2.5 gallon batches( about 6 lbs of grain with 3.7 gallons of water fills the pot). With a 7.5 gallon pot you could probably do a 4 gallon no sparge batch. Figure approx 8 lbs of grain with 4.6-4.75 gallons of water. I use beersmith to scale the...

A couple of quick questions on small batch all grain

I am assuming that your pot is large enough for a full boil, you didn't say. If you are only doing small batches ( i also only do 2.5 gallon batches) it's pretty easy just to chill in the sink. I just freeze a bunch of water beforehand and keep dumping it in the sink filled with water around the...

Trying BIAB Tomorrow - need advice

I wrap mine in beach towels with one folded on the top and do not lose much heat, I also stir the pot every 20 min during the mash.

    Thinking (again) about BIAB

You could just experiment and make a batch that fits your kettle size. The largest volume will be the mash. I have 5 gallon pot and the mash is full to the brim with 5 or six pounds of grain doing 2.5 gallon batches. Once I pull and drain the bag there is plenty of head room for the boil. I also...

Can you Brew It recipe for Magic Hat number 9

I am on my second batch of this (2.5 gallon batches) and used 2 ox of apricot extract. it went in the bottles yesterday. First batch compared with a six pack was very close. Interesting to note that now the hops listed on their website for this beer are cascade and apollo not columbus and cascade.

    Brew in bag?

Those 5 gal paint strainers seemed small to me. Info from the the Aussie sites say the bag should be big enough to fit your pot inside it and still close it. I went to Target and bought a pair of sheer panel curtains (nylon) for $9.00. I was able to sew 4 bags out of the two panels. A little...

Brew In a Bag questions for 5gal pot

Good luck with you Bock because it's a high gravity beer you may need to add a sparge or go smaller to hit your target volume. Here are a couple of good links with pictures for the process. http://www.beersmith.com/blog/2009/04/14/brew-in-a-bag-biab-all-grain-beer-brewing/...

Brew In a Bag questions for 5gal pot

Yes ,to make up for not sparging. The goal is calculate your total volume taking into account grain absorption and boil off and start with that.I don't know what would happen if you used less as I have not done that. If you are looking for more finished volume there are people that add a...

Brew In a Bag questions for 5gal pot

I do a true BIAB , mash with the all the water needed to get to the pre-boil volume taking into account grain absorption. There is no sparge just mash and mash-out. Based on your water calculations(2.5 gallons before absorption) you have to be adding a sparge in there to get a correct pre-boil...

Brew In a Bag questions for 5gal pot

With a 20qt pot, the largest BIAB batch you can make is about 2.5 gallons. I have a 20 qt pot, I start with about 3.5 gallons of water and by the time you add about 5.5 lbs of grain it's up to the top of the pot. Makes it easy to hold the mash temp though.
