Ordered a MRB, but got some extras! Help ID them PLZ?

You'll need fresh extract mate. There's no sense in using ingredients which are no longer suitable for consumption. All you will do is spend time bottling it, then realizing it is not drinkable. You will also waste money by putting the other ingredients in that brew which you will only pour...

Extract brewing: does everyone buy kits or does anyone buy the materials separate?

I do partial mash brews and buy only the ingredients I want. Course, here in New Zealand, there is not a lot of "kit" variety. I choose the ingredients as it seems more fun than just assembling a kit. I like to be able to choose the materials.

Imperial NZ IPA - over the top?

I haven't tried Schlafly's NZ IPA, but I am familiar with those hops. They are real beauties. I'm especially a fan of the Motueka. NS is good too though. I like the idea of keeping the grains simple. I was watching the guy from Stone Brewery talk about brewing IIPAs. He recommended...

    There're seeds in my beer!

Cant fix it now, the best thing to do is to judge the beer as you drink it and take notes on the affect. I would definitely try to avoid seeds or large hop cone particles in the beer tho. Beer is good to drink, but not that great when you have to chew. :)

    Bittering VS Aroma Hops

You could always go out and get another couple oz of hops and add as a dry hop. That would replace some of the lost aroma/flavor. Either way, your beer will be just fine.

BIAB...Why do I need to do more?

This method is exactly what I did on the weekend. I certainly didn't plan on it tho. I only discovered my boil kettle was to small for the grains at the last minute. Rather than cancel brewday, I ran downstairs and dug out an old 44L cooler. Cleaned it out and hoped for the best. I got 78%...

Never dump your beer!!! Patience IS a virtue!!! Time heals all things, even beer!

The style is an IPA. I pitched a single packet of US-05. Fermentation started after a little more than 2 days. The yeast was pitched at approximately 86, but the temp came down to approximately 70 over the next 24 hours. Fermenation temps were controlled and stayed between 64 and 71. The...

didn't plan on dry hopping, but thinking I might have to

Aspirin taste could be a beer fault. Medicinal (chlorophenolic) Chloroseptic, medicine cabinet Avoid water with chlorine or chloramines (use RO water if necessary). Avoid bleach sanitizers. Reduce astringency/grain husk sources. Avoid excessive whole hop use. Check for infection.

Never dump your beer!!! Patience IS a virtue!!! Time heals all things, even beer!

I have a question.... I stupidly used some twine to tie hop bags closed. I believe that dye from the twine has leeched into the beer. The beer tastes really, really bad. I couldn't drink more than 2 sips. Its very cloudy, light does not pass through the bottle. Is there any chance that...

Is hop utilization affected by boil volume and/or gravity?

Hi lads, I'd like to hear some opinions on this technique I am going to try. The math may not be correct for boil off loss, but I plan to top up with boiled water. Target 6 gallon batch Vessel 1: 4 (and a bit) gallons plain water for doing a 60 min boil of hops Vessel 2: 2 (and a bit) gallons...

Sparge in a bag with hop tea?

I'm kind of thinking the same thing for my mini mash tomorrow. I will start a boil in vessel number 1, which I will place my 60 min hop addition. I'll do this first so the liquid can cool to sparge temp. Then in vessel number 2, I'll start the mash with pre-heated strike water (BIAB). Dough...

    sediment free beer. help!

Drinking from the bottle robs you of most of the bonus of making home brew. The aroma, the color and the head are completely lost by drinking from the bottle. Plus, there's something special about watching your freshly brewed beer pour into a nice glass jug. Hmmmm beer....

    Very new...

My advice is to go with a starter kit from your local home brew shop. You'll get everything you need to brew a simple beer. The starter kit at my local has this in it: 1. 30 litre barrel & lid 2. Tap & stick-on thermometer 3. Bubbler airlock and grommet 4. Hydrometer 5. Brewer's spoon 39cm 6...

    OK..Its official. Im bug bitten!

Correction: Homebrew saves money for those who aren't insanely addicted to it. Homewbrew is more expensive for the poor sods who have to buy all the equipment and pimp out their brew station. I think most of us are in the latter category.... :)

Opening beer bottles without a proper opener? What objects have you used?

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned using another beer bottle as an opener yet. Its pretty standard practice around these parts. When I get to the last beer, its probably a lighter.
