one thing i don't like about Rogue, is that you can tell they use the same yeast strain for every ale. i mean come on, that Pacman yeast strain does not give you what you are looking for in Belgian Ale or a Chocolate Stout

oh!!! how did i forget Anchor?? I love the Steam beer, the Bock, their Xmas Ale (our special brew), their Porter, and the unbelievable "Old Foghorn" Barleywine!!

for cheap stuff, ya can't beat Molson XXX i used to love J.W. Dundee's "Honey Brown Lager" (until they changed their name, and logo, but continued selling the same beer at a much higher price) for real good beer St. Bernardus ABT 12 Chimay Red, Chimay Blue Saranac's Winter Mix Pack...

What is the wildest brew you have brewed - or what is a 'Strange Brew' to you?

oh...and to further add to this thread, the other night, me and my buddy Joe made a doppelbock and we are gonna put prunes in the secondary fermentor. it's called the crapinator (i know, i know, childish joke)

What is the wildest brew you have brewed - or what is a 'Strange Brew' to you?

Believe it or not, it was ****in excellent. a nice sipper, very warming, sweet, tasty, malty, a bit of a wine-like taste. ages very well too. i made it for our one year anniversary (1/26/07), we split a 750 of it on our second, and it was so good. we each had a 12 ounce bottle of it on...

    Is there a standard!?!?

just my two cents, if you don't feel like studying, and just want to come close, Beertools.com is pretty good for that. when you click on a style, they will give you the definition, history, typical ingredients, and what flavor, aroma and mouthfeel should appear. then when you attempt to...

Cost comparison-Extract vs. All-grain vs. Macrobrew

ah....i must have missed that. there is a lot to read on this board.

Adding sugar to your beer is NOT going to make it taste like freakin' cider.

while i agree that you can make perfectly good beer with cane/corn sugar, i do know after much reading (articles from ale street news, and the book "the beer diet") that all malt beers are healthier for you. they say an all malt dark ale after dinner is excellent for your digestive system...

Cost comparison-Extract vs. All-grain vs. Macrobrew

while i agree with you to an extent, i still say that it depends on what you are brewing. you can definately brew a 5 gallon batch of a "Mephistopheles" clone for way less than the actual cost of buying two cases of "Mephistopheles" (or World Wide Stout, or DFH 120, or Newport Storm 01, or...

Should I have pitched two packs of yeast?

wow...... i couldn't think of a better way to put it into perspective. that just rules

it certainly does take work and experience, and it is absolutely worth the work! :)

What is the wildest brew you have brewed - or what is a 'Strange Brew' to you?

hah, that grocery and produce thread was kinda cool....i've actually done stuff like that. a few months ago, i made a pretty damn good brown ale from nothing but malta goya, malta polar, organic vanilla cola, organic root beer, brown sugar and bakers yeast. as far as other strange beers...

hahaha! that rules! that was a great episode too!

    Anti-IPA ?

they sell em in 4-packs? i've only seen em sold as singles. being that those singles are 8-10 bucks, i'd assume a 4-pack would be expensive. i like 120, although i think that's partially because the alcohol and malt flavors help to mellow the hop bitterness, and bring out the hop flavor and...

    Anti-IPA ?

i like some I.P.A.'s there is just a fine line between good/well-balanced I.P.A. and overly sharp "hop-bomb" personally though, if i want some serious hop flavor, i like something that packs a nice malt profile as well.... like a barleywine or imperial stout.

Cost comparison-Extract vs. All-grain vs. Macrobrew

ya know, the best thing, is that you can make extreme beers a LOT cheaper. look at the Newport Storm limited yearly releases, Dogfishhead's stronger stuff (W.W.S., 120,O.S.B., etc.), Avery's "Demons Of Ale" series....etc. imagine buying a case of Mephistopheles 8.99 x 24 = 215.76 i have...

    Fermentation Question

the worst part is, i am not that new....i have been brewing for two years. i feel like a chump, in that i (obviously) should know alot more about it by now. anyway, my plan is to just let em sit until next sunday (two weeks from the day i added the yeast), check the gravity, and if it still...
