Any ideas on how to insulate the lid of my cooler?

Fold an old blanket to the size of the closed lid, then lay it on top after you mash in - works for me! Skol!

    2 yeast questions...

Tom - likely that your starter worked and is done - you had a fair amount of yeast and a comparatively small amount of wort, it won't take long. As for the white stuff on the bottom, that be yeast, so brew something with it! Skol!

    Raspberry Wheat Question...

Hey Humdum - welcome over to this side! I've been told that Carlson gets a little cough-syruppy - I've used McCormick's raspberry right into the bottling bucket with tasty success.... Skol!

How long does yeast last in fridge?

Just like HB99, I just popped a WY1335 that was a year old - 3 days at 70F and it had swelled somewhat, 1 more day at about 75F and it was tight - made a starter, bumped it, then bottled it into a sanitized pair of 22's for the next pale ale, then another batch after that. Got the yeast for...

Things to do with copper tubing

At that price, you need to go into the IC business! If nothing else, make a first stage pre-chiller. At 30 cents per foot, you could likely sell everything you buy on ebay for double or triple what you paid..... Skol!

    200,000 BTU natural gas burner!

Sorry for the not-quite-off-topic semi-hijack, but does anyone know if a turkey burner can convert to NG and how hot will it run? I ahve two turkey burners and an unused NG tap off my patio..... Skol!

    DUBBEL UPDATE: 3 days post-pitching...

Evan - congrats on getting things going - when I think of dumping yeast into a high gravity wort, I think about jumping into water with my eyes closed - if I'm 6 feet down I will get my bearings much sooner than if I'm 30 feet down....... I always thought starters were unnecessary with...

    Why did you start brewing?

Kinda' late jumping in here - I scored three cases of Leinie's Original in returnable bottles for $5.99 a case in central Wisonsin in 1999 - kept the bottles in the garage thinking that someday I'd use them to homebrew. Also knew I had a bit of a sulfite allergy that BMC seemed to kick up and...

    propane cooker?

Any turkey burner will put out a bunch more heat than a 15K BTU side burner. Importantly, that side burner is likely rated for only 10-20 pounds of load - that's about 2 gallons and a pot..... Skol!

    Stone Cellar Brewpub

Visited this place for lunch Saturday: www.stonecellarbrewpub.com/ Sampler of 12 beers included some unremarkable, as well as some surprises. The vanilla stout was overwhelming, the oatmeal stout was very very smooth. The pilsner and the light were hits with everyone except me, and the...

    First batch ever

Frank - the increase in temp might have kicked off your yeast for a little more action, but i sort of suspect it's just suspended CO2 coming out - have you taken any gravity readings? Sorry about that football thing yesterday.....OK, not really! Skol!
