    1st Year Hop Experience

today was a good day I strung up my sisal twine and rope. I decided to stick with the coarse stuff and avoid wire because of the slip when tying off my twine to the top. First I tied the top rope. Then spaced out two twine lines per box, tied them from the top and ran down to the plants with...

    1st Year Hop Experience

So I’ve got a couple questions I’m hoping I can get some help with. These are new baby plants so Im pretty hesitant on some things. I purchased some garden safe brand neem oil extract. I could use some information on how and when I may need to use this product. Also about fertilizer...any...

    1st Year Hop Experience

Creating something we can walk under and around that is also a flower garden was my way of convincing my wife on planting hops at our new home. I do believe in a few years she will be impressed with them but for now some added color is a nice touch.

Best grain mill in your opinion?

I purchased a cereal killer from AIH at $99 after reading this thread and asking the boss lady what’s in the budget. Looking forward to doing my first all grain with BIAB! The better my beers taste to my wife the more stuff I can get away with cramming into my basement brewery :mischievous:

    string/wire for hops?

It’s like a wind tunnel back here. We have a huge open field across the street. I have both 1/4” sisal and regular thinner baling sisal. I planned on using the thin stuff to reach the first 9’ vertical stretch to a horizontal support wire between my posts then, from there, diagonally attach...

    1st Year Hop Experience

Yeah same here waiting for some more rhizomes from adventures in homebrewing. Also looking like by the end of the month. I’m glad I have this going already but I’m sure these fast growing plants with have no problem almost catching up to these guys. As long as they come back strong next year...

    1st Year Hop Experience

The wife and I picked out some flowers for the hops garden. I heard marigolds are good companions for hops so I did some in each hop planter. Also leveled the bricks up. It’s starting to looking alive now back here!

Still waiting on Rhizomes from NB

I’m also waiting on my rhizomes from adventures in home brewing. With quick response, I was told via email that the rhizomes are harvested in their area late April and shipped to them at that time for processing and shipping out. Seems like the rhizome harvesting date in their area is later than...

    string/wire for hops?

Has anyone used wire then wrapped with a fibrous twine up the wire with success? I have some pretty good wind blow through my back yard and I was wondering if this is a good solution

When did you stop extract brewing?

I did a 1 gal salty lime gose kettle soured for my first all grain batch after a few extract brews. It was a nice way to get started with no extra equipment and get to taste the difference. It was very noticeable to me and have been itching to up my scale so I’m slowly taking stabs at these...

    Bentonite question!

I do tend to abide by the safe than sorry motto in the end. That’s pretty much why I made an account on here. Although, I do enjoy a little experimentation! And gotta love the convenience of amazon.

    Bentonite question!

Ok wow sounds like you have some better understanding on bentonite. Is this any different in any form or food safe matter than the brewer’s 100% calcium bentonite green clay? This product claims it is also 100% calcium bentonite add further states on the label no additives, fragrances, etc. I...

    Bentonite question!

My wife has this bentonite clay mask in her collection. Can I use this stuff for clearing? I’m only hesitant because it’s sold as a beauty product and I’ve never used bentonite before and I’m currently fermenting sake. It looks like it’s pure. Is this still the right stuff? I’d hate to buy some...

    1st Year Hop Experience

Hey guys quick update I’ve got about 7 shoots on one cascade and 5 on the other all really enjoying the sun lately. They’ve been out of the ground for weeks creeping up in cooler weather. But in just these past few days of warmth they grew 1-2” I’m beginning to see the growth potential these...

Homemade Sake + Making Koji Rice

The 3rd and final additions of koji, rice, and water have been added to the fermenter over the past two days and stirred up really well. I’m loving the smells every time I open the fermenter. After the last rice/water yesterday I put it in the kegerator at 48F(9C). The work is done for the next...

Homemade Sake + Making Koji Rice

Day 14(continued): Just finished adding my 26% additions of both rice and water tonight. That’s 586.56g dry weight rice steamed, cooled, and mixed well with 938.6g cold spring water added to fermentor. Here the sake is now almost halfway full (about 46%) of its total final volume. Tomorrow...

Homemade Sake + Making Koji Rice

Day 11: The shubo remained cool until my 1st addition of koji today. I decided to do the next 6 days of moromi stage at 60F(15.5C) by unplugging my kegerator located in my 57-60F(13.8-15.5C)basement and keeping it inside. I’ve seen conflicting information as to do this step cool or room temp. I...

Homemade Sake + Making Koji Rice

Here we will be starting the moto/shubo or yeast starter. Here are some notes on the next 48hrs of Moto before the yeast is pitched. You will see I did the math out for all future additions. We start with 7% and double up until the full 100%. I based my calculations on my Koji final weight-564g...
