Cool Wort Using Recirculation, Questions about Setup?

I use something similar to Spincycle Weldless Kettle Whirlpool Return. Depending on your groundwater temperature, adding the ice bath may be unnecessary. I use a Jaded Hydra immersion chiller, and it will bring wort to within a couple of degrees of groundwater in less than 10 minutes when...

    Chicago Water Report?

Chlorine. I fill my water jugs after each brew day, and let them sit so the chlorine dissipates. Lakefront up in Milwaukee says the same thing, and we are all pulling from Lake Michigan. Getting mildly off topic, the history of why Milwaukee and not Chicago developed as such a brewing hub...

    Brew Kettle Hardware

What would probably work is a 1/2" NPS threaded nipple (brew hardware has one, but out of stock right now). That would thread all the way through the hole, then you have a female-ended dip tube on the inside and then your valve on the outside...

    Westvleteren 12

My profile picture is the real thing. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forum/threads/westvleteren-12-clone-multiple-award-winner.500037/ is the one I made and it is sublime. It is super close. I used all 3# of D180 intead of 2.5, so mine was a slight bit different.

    Sanitizing Fermonster after contamination

Not really helpful to you right now, but I gave mine a 2 day strong bleach soak after it spent about 18 months fermenting sours 20180831_065753 by mirthfuldragon posted Jan 8, 2019 at 8:26 PM and I've used them without issue in standard fermentation without issue since. That's after a multi-day...

    Split duplex receptacles

They will have to be on separate circuits (i.e., different breakers) to function. Like @etk29321 said, it could be that one side of the outlet it switch and the other is constant, and both are on the same circuit. A given circuit only has a specific amount of capacity, so a single 15A circuit...

    wiring garage for 240v

This situation is also an opportunity to evaluation your garage wiring as a whole, so you aren't doing all this again in another five or ten years when you buy an electric car, a table saw, or other major electrical draw. Adding a sub-panel and upgrading the wiring to handle larger load isn't...

4.4cu ft mini fridge for FV?

Oh, I did that too - one of those osculating multi-tools makes the job super easy. I tried taking it off by removing the screws that hold the door in, but the plastic interior door skin lip is what holds the gaskets in, so it is easier but also more destructive to leave the interior door skin...

4.4cu ft mini fridge for FV?

I have a 4.4 cu ft fridge; dunno if it is the same one, but it is the same basic layout (no freezer). Measurement is 11 3/4" from hump to door and 26" floor to temperature dial. I use an Inkbird controller in a quart mason jar full of water, and 120mm DC case fan to circulate air. They work...

    Fan for Keezer

I am so ashamed of my keezer line routing right now.

    Better freezer brand?

I set the thermostat to the warmest setting, set the +/- to 2, and then set it to 39, with a 5 minute compressor delay. That way if it fails in the on position, it may not actually destroy my kegs. The warmest setting should still be well below freezing, and the coldest setting probably at or...

    Better freezer brand?

Or checking the controller cycle time. Since the warmest thermostat setting on a freezer is well below beer temperature, if the controller compressor delay isn't long enough, it would trigger the cooling element on and off almost constantly. Not to denigrate the OP in anyway, but checking why...

    guidance needed for smoker recommendations

I have an electric Masterbuilt. I use it half a dozen times a year and have had it for six or seven years now. Works great. As complicated as a crock pot. The little trap-door to add wood chips is nifty. It's also cheap. Dunno if I would ever go out of my way to upgrade.

Which Aldi Beers are good enough that you wish you could clone them?

Now that the beer is carbed, I am very happy with it personally. The esters from Westmalle come through significantly, leaving a very fruity taste, with the hops in the background, leaving a subdued earthy/herbal note. In terms of being a clone, it really needs Cascade and the IBUs are likely...

    why use a pump...

I do while chilling most of the time, so I don't have to stir. I was lazy last time and did not bother, but chilling took an extra five minutes. Whirlpooling during the chilling helps gather the trub and speed the cooling process. For NEIPAs and wet-hopped beers, I will recirculate back...

    why use a pump...

I do BIAB. I have a chugger. I use it for whirlpool hopping for NEIPAs, etc., and for circulating/whirlpool while chilling with my Jaded Hydra. I do not recirculate during the mash. My pump is screwed to a 2x6, and just sits on the floor. Easy peasy, no muss no fuss. I also use it to fill...

Which Aldi Beers are good enough that you wish you could clone them?

I wonder how much the Cascade hops mask any Belgian esters. The label indicates Brouwerij Martens NV, which is Belgian, and I feel like it finishes drier than Fat Tire or British ales generally, but that could be my own preconceptions as I never measured the gravity of the actual. It might be...

Which Aldi Beers are good enough that you wish you could clone them?

FG stabilized at 1.009. Kegged on Sunday @ 20psi, so carbonation is still coming. The color is nice, but as I expected, 3787/Belgian W is almost certainly not the yeast they used originally. Between the warm fermentation temperature and the minimal IBUs, this thing is full of fruity esters...

First timer - deciding to do AG method

+1. Everyone's first beer should be a hefeweizen - not overly sensitive to oxidation, and if it gets's a bit cold it will come out clovey, and if it gets a bit warm it will come out banana-y. If not a hefe, then a cream ale, etc. OG under 1.050, IBUs under 40. It's one thing to understand...
