    What's good in upstate NY?

Turned out our US visit wasn't very long due to budget and time constraints; we visited Niagara Falls NY and drove around for an afternoon, did some shopping and went back to Canada again. I got flipped off by a soccer mom in an SUV haha, the highlight of the trip :) And I got to buy some PBR at...

    Dumped my first batch !!

I also dump beer I don't like enough to drink an entire keg of in a reasonable timeframe. If I need space in my keezer and it's been in there for a few months it gets sacrificed. Freeing indeed!

    Brewing With A New Baby

A real danger is putting strain on your marriage by not explicitly agreeing on who is 'on call' when. Loads of new parents (mostly the daddies) do not always realize that when one parent is enjoying some r&r the other parent automatically has to dedicate ALL of his/her time and attention to the...

Refurbishing a Ball lock keg - Pressure relief valve?

I have a few that came with lids with PRV's that seal with a tiny o-ring on a seat, rather dan a rubber-foot-on-hole like yours, of which I also have a few, of which all are 20 years plus. Almost all the (Chinese) eBay vendors sell the o-ring one, haven't been able to find the foot-on-hole ones...

Best way to dry hop with pellets?

I just chuck em in the primary, let them sit for a few days and then cold crash and keg. I filter using The Clarifier (HBT thread) which works well. Just cold crashing should get most if not all debris out of suspension, if you rack carefully you should be ok.

    Brewpi element kits

I have the Brewpi 2.8kw element and mounting kit. Very well made. I had trouble getting the thing to not leak, they solved it for me free of charge by sending an extra silicon ring that originally wasn't part of the kit (it now is).

    Don't Do That.

Don't dump DME in an erlenmeyer with boiling water. After cleaning up, while humming Culture Club's 'Do you really want to hurt me', don't dump nutri-blend into said erlenmeyer with boiling wort. It really wants to hurt you.

Simcoe, Citra and Columbus leftovers IPA: hop usage?

I am sitting on three bags of Simcoe, Citra and Columbus pellets of 100gr (3.5oz) each, leftovers from competition brew tryouts, that need to be used before they spoil. I'd like to brew a 5gal big nose IPA with them of moderate strength and bitterness (think Punk IPA). I was thinking to do the...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Thanks for your replies! I can assure you the heater does a nice job heating the entire chamber, not just the bottom of the fermenter. Also the beer probe does not seem to be affected that much by the chamber temp (it's metal on metal underneath the sponge). The only downside of this setup...

Did your brewing change after first kid?

I didn't touch my brewing stuff for about a year after my kid was born (although truth be told I also had a slipped disc pinching a nerve in my back which hurt as hell). Me and SWMBO both work fulltime so practically the whole weekend is family time. I now have one day a month that is dedicated...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

The beer probe is pressed against the fermenter using a sponge (2), the chamber probe is taped to the wall on the right (you can just see its tip next to the '1'). The heater fan is on the right side of the box, pushing air out of the black vent on the top left of the box. You're right wbarber...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

So as suggested by people in the Craftbeerpi thread, rather than replacing Brewpi with CPB, I am here to ask help with debugging my setup. I have built a Brewpi rig exactly as explained in this thread and it works fine with only the fridge actuator installed. However I installed a heater...

    CraftBeerPi - Raspberry Pi Software

But I need an excuse to tinker with new stuff :) As my ferm. chamber is next to my brew stand it would be really cool to have CBP run everything.

    CraftBeerPi - Raspberry Pi Software

yeah, the advice that was given was to remove the heater when not needed, when I removed the device in the settings it somehow stayed on, heating the chamber. Luckily I discovered that on time but now I am a bit paranoid and I hate the idea of having to physically plug and unplug the heater...
