    Heather

I bottled my heather ale yesterday. I ended up boiling two oz. of dried heather for 60 minutes and then two oz. for 5, which was just a guess based on some other recipes that I had seen. This was a 5 gallon batch. I usually taste a sample when I am bottling (who doesn't?) and I didn't...

    Heather

I would like to add some heather to my next batch of Scotch Ale. I will be brewing a 5 gallon batch using extract. How much heather should I add and when should it go into the boil?

bottling question why use a bottling wand?

I don't recall where I read about this method, but it really works well. One of the best, easy to follow tips that I have ever read. I put the bucket on my kitchen counter above the dishwasher and open the dishwasher door. I can keep sanitized bottles on the dishwasher rack and the door...

    first bottling question...

I typically taste my brews two weeks after bottling, and in most cases have found that they are quite drinkable. I like to give them another week in the bottle after the first taste, just to see if I can discern any difference, but in general I can't, though I'm sure that there are people with...

Bottling at 1.020. Add priming sugar?

I raised the temperature and got bubbling, but that stopped two weeks ago when I first got the 1.020 reading. I could probably raise the temperature again (currently is is at about 60) just to sell. I wasn't planning on bottling for a few days.

Bottling at 1.020. Add priming sugar?

I have five gallons of porter that has been been stuck at 1.020 for over two weeks now. The directions said it should finish at 1.012. As another thread suggests, it may be due to it being made from extract, so I think I'm just going to go ahead and bottle. The question is, should I add priming...

    Any harm in adding yeast?

My latest batch had: 6.6lbs Light LME 1lb Light DME (both Briess) 1Lb crystal malt (60L) 1Lb brown malt 1Lb carafa II malt 1 vial White Labs P001 yeast I didn't get an OG because I dropped my hydrometer as I was about to take the reading. The fermentation has stopped. Right now...

Multiple issues with electric stove brewing

You might want to check your stove elements. A new heating element for an electric doesn't cost much and may solve your problem. My stove is around ten years old and I have no problem getting 2.5 gallons to boil and then maintain the boil at a medium setting.

    Temp Control

I'm a beginner, too. I have to do my fermenting in my basement which, during the winter doesn't get much warmer than 58 degrees. I bought a Brew Belt from my local store before I started my first batch. I put the Brew Belt on the fermenter and wrapped it in an old sleeping bag when the...

    Temperature Dropping

I have to do my fermentation in my basement, which at this time of year gets no warmer than about 58 degrees. On Monday I started a new batch (my second) and by Tuesday it was bubbling away happily. The temperature of the brew, according to the stick on thermometer, was 64 degrees and it stayed...
